Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows 2000 are not
affected by this issue. The condition occurs only in Windows NT 4.0.
WORKAROUND: If an "Update Now" or "Stand Alone Status" from a
Windows NT 4.0 client fails to communicate with a printer on a remote
WIndows NT 4.0 shared computer, make sure that the Network>
Services> RPC Configuration service is correctly installed on both the
client AND the host (print server) machines, and that the RPC Name
Service Provider field (click RPC - "Properties" to view this information)
is set to "Windows NT Locator."
• ISSUE (External): Enterprise Autoconfiguration does not work on a Windows NT
4.0 client from a TCP/IP host using Windows XP.
DESCRIPTION: Enterprise Autoconfiguration (EAC) does not work on a
Windows NT 4.0 client from a TCP/IP host using Windows XP. Windows
XP (Professional) works if the DNS does not have a conflict resolving the
printer name to the correct TCP/IP address.
WORKAROUND: Resolve the incorrect DNS information to ensure that
the TCP/IP address and printer name reference one another correctly.
• ISSUE (External): The Update Now feature stops working after bidirectional-
communication support is disabled.
DESCRIPTION: The Automatic Update button from the driver Properties
Configure tab remains enabled even after bidirectional communication
has been disabled, but when you click Update Now, an error message
appears. To replicate the occurrence, follow these steps:
1. From the Start menu, click Settings, and then click Printers.
2. Open the driver properties and select the Details tab.
3. In spool settings, disable the bidirectional support.
4. Go to the Configure tab. The Automatic Update option is enabled.
5. Click Update Now.
WORKAROUND: None. This is as designed.
• ISSUE (External): After you click Update Now on an installed shared printer, the
following error message appears: "The command could not be completed
because a printer communication error occurred." This occurs using a Windows
2000 host, a Window XP client, and the PCL 6 driver.
DESCRIPTION: To recreate the condition, follow these steps:
1. Install the driver using Custom Installation.
2. Share the device.
3. Restart the computer when the installation process has been completed.
