The system includes Part # 33158 (Hitch Head and Yoke), Part # 31567 (Cross Member), and Part # 31314 (2 Uprights). Installation is estimated to take 90-120 minutes.

Function Description:

The Husky 16KW 5th Wheel Hitch System is designed to facilitate the towing of 5th Wheel Trailers with a total Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) up to 16,000 lbs. It serves as the connection point between the tow vehicle and the trailer, ensuring a secure and stable towing experience. The hitch incorporates safety features to prevent improper coupling and provides adjustability for various truck and trailer configurations.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Part Numbers: P/N: 33158 (Hitch Head and Yoke), Part # 31567 (Cross Member), Part # 31314 (2 Uprights).
  • Towing Capacity: Up to 16,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) for 5th Wheel Trailers.
  • King Pin Weight Capacity: Never exceed 4,000 lbs.
  • Truck Bed Compatibility: Recommended for use only in truck beds 6 feet or longer. For 6-foot short bed truck installations, a Husky Heavy Duty Roller combined with a 16K W 5th Wheel Hitch is recommended for increased turning clearance.
  • Hitch Head Type: 4-way swivel head.
  • Height Adjustability: From 15.75 to 19.25 inches in 1-3/16 inch increments.
  • Cross Beam Adjustability:
    • Vertical: 4 mounting positions in 1-inch increments.
    • Fore & Aft: 2 sets of holes in the Upright (item 17) provide 1-inch fore and aft movement from the center line of the Uprights.
  • Base Rail Compatibility: Use with 4-bolt 31323 or 10-bolt 30686 base rails (Base Rails are not included with this kit). The center-to-center (fore and aft) distance between base rails must be 22 inches, and the side-to-side distance between slots must be 20-5/8 inches.
  • Fastener Torque Specifications:
    • Cross Beam nuts: 75 ft-lbs (Grade 5 unless specified otherwise).
    • Handle Assembly nuts (3/8" Carriage Bolts): 23 ft-lbs.
    • General fasteners (1/2" diameter): 75 ft-lbs.
  • Clearance Requirement: A minimum of 6 inches clearance between the bottom of the trailer nose and the top of the truck bedsides is required for level-towing. For off-road use, 8 to 10 inches is recommended.
  • King Pin Position: The center of the 5th Wheel Hitch should be positioned between 1 and 3 inches forward of the center of the Rear Axle.
  • Lube Disc Thickness: Should not exceed 3/16".

Usage Features:

  • Professional Installation Recommended: For best results, professional installation by a qualified technician is recommended.
  • Decal Integrity: Never remove any decals from the product.
  • Compatibility: The 33158 Hitch Head and Yoke is compatible with various kits including 31666K (shown in manual), 31667K, 32392K, 33011K, 33013K, 33152K, and 33170K.
  • Safety Features:
    • King Pin Engagement: The hitch will only fully close when the King Pin of the 5th Wheel Trailer is correctly located inside the hitch throat. This prevents incorrect hook-ups.
    • Lock Hasp Indicator: Provides a visual indication of whether the jaw is open or closed. An orange indicator shows the hitch is unlocked (jaw open), while a covered indicator shows the jaw is closed.
    • Trigger Plate: A mechanism that, when pressed (e.g., by the king pin), releases the jaw mechanism to fully close. This is primarily for testing the mechanism.
    • Locking Clevis Pin: Used through the lock hasp to retain the hitch in the closed position for security. A padlock is recommended for additional security.
  • Coupling Procedure:
    1. Ensure trailer wheels are blocked and stabilizer jacks are retracted.
    2. Ensure trailer landing leg feet are on a stable surface.
    3. Pull handle fully out, then slide it back until it catches on the latch (partially closed position).
    4. Verify the Orange indicator is not obscured (hitch unlocked).
    5. Set trailer king pin box 1½" to 1” below the hitch head.
    6. Back up the truck so the king pin enters the hitch.
    7. The king pin will trip the latch, allowing the jaw to close and the handle to move to the closed position, covering the indicator.
    8. Secure with the Locking Clevis Pin or a padlock.
  • Uncoupling Procedure:
    1. Chock front and rear trailer wheels.
    2. Back up truck against kingpin to relieve pressure on the slide bar, set parking brake, put in park, and turn off engine.
    3. Extend trailer landing gear until trailer weight is just off the 5th wheel plate (max 1/16" gap).
    4. Disconnect electrical and breakaway connectors.
    5. Pull handle fully out, then slide it back until it catches on the latch (open position).
    6. Check lock hasp indicator shows jaw open.
    7. Slowly drive truck out from underneath the trailer.
    8. Observe lock hasp to ensure hitch does not accidentally close.
  • Important Safety Reminders:
    • Never overload the truck, trailer, or hitch.
    • Do not install the hitch by fastening to the floor of the pickup box.
    • Do not exceed the rated capacity of 16,000 lbs GVWR or 4,000 lbs king pin weight.
    • Never back the tow vehicle under the king pin and then lower the king pin into the hitch, as this can cause high pinning, damage, injury, or death.
    • Never lower the king pin into the hitch using the trailer jacks, as this can cause the king pin to sit on top of the hitch, leading to detachment, damage, injury, or death.
    • During coupling/uncoupling, sudden movements can occur; keep clear of the truck and trailer.
    • All operations (connecting cables, opening/closing hitch, installing safety clips/padlocks) should be done when trailer weight is on landing gear, wheels are chocked, and truck is in park with emergency brake applied.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: Inspect the hitch each time before connecting a trailer. Check for tight fasteners, cracks, excessive wear, and free movement of the jaw mechanism.
  • King Pin Indicator Check: Verify the King Pin Indicator is working correctly by pulling the handle out, then holding it forward and letting it slide back. The jaw should not close all the way without a king pin; if it does, the hitch is defective and must be repaired or replaced.
  • Fastener Tightness: After the first 100 miles, and at least once a year thereafter, inspect and retighten all bolts to 75 ft-lbs (for 1/2" diameter fasteners).
  • Lubrication:
    • Top Plate: Apply bearing grease to the top plate before coupling, or use a lubrication plate (min 10" diameter, max 3/16" thickness).
    • Moving Parts: Regular lubrication (every 3 to 6 months) is required for the Slide Arm, Cam Track, Jaw Pivot, and Indicator Mechanism.
    • Pivot Pin: Apply White Lithium Grease liberally to all moving surfaces, including the Pivot Pin holding the Head and Yoke to the Cross Beam. For thorough lubrication, remove the Pivot Pin, turn the Head and Yoke upside down to access the underneath of the hitch, and pull the handle to access parts. The Head to Yoke bolts are tightened to 240 ft-lbs.
    • Alternative Lubrication: Spray White Lithium Grease can be used every couple of months.
    • Zerk Fitting: Grease the Zerk fitting periodically, located on the plate side of the pivot pin.
  • Latch Mechanism Caution: The latch mechanism can close with heavy force; use extreme care to keep fingers, hands, extremities, and clothing out of its path to prevent severe injury.

Troubleshooting:

The manual includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Hitch difficult to install/remove from base rails: Check assembly, parallel base rails, and truck bed collapsing around carriage bolts.
  • Hitch will not hook up to trailer king pin: Check incorrect king pin height, excessive angle between hitch head and king pin, lube disc thickness, and bent king pin.
  • Hitch difficult to unhook from trailer: Check king pin resting against latch, incorrect king pin height, excessive angle between hitch head and king pin, lube disc thickness, and bent king pin.
  • Latch difficult to close/open: Check for damaged hitch head, lack of lubrication.
  • Latch does not lock into open position: Check for missing or damaged spring/trip mechanism.
  • Table top distorted/cracking: Indicates wear and tear, requiring hitch head replacement.
