Overview

This document provides installation instructions for the PH55/PYPA Series Direct Drive Blower, Single Package Heat Pumps with Electric Heat (optional).

Function Description:

The device is a single-package heat pump with an integrated direct drive blower, designed for outdoor installation. It provides both cooling and heating functions, with optional electric heat for auxiliary heating. The unit is designed to be placed on a platform at ground level, such as a concrete slab or cement blocks. It is crucial for the unit to be installed in a well-drained area and supported high enough to prevent runoff from entering.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Dimensions: The unit has a height of 27 inches. The condensate drain outlet is a 3/4" (19.1mm) threaded female PVC connection.
  • Duct Collars: The unit is supplied with duct collars that must be reversed during installation, with the flange facing outwards. The round-shaped flange accommodates a 12" diameter supply duct and a 14" diameter return duct.
  • Electrical Access: There are 1 1/4" diameter electrical access points for line voltage power supply (one for the unit, one for the heater) and 3/8" diameter holes for low voltage wiring.
  • Condensate Drain: A field-supplied condensate trap, allowing a standing column of water of at least 2" (50.8mm), must be installed as near to the unit as possible for proper drainage. The outlet of the trap must be at least 1" below the unit drain connection.
  • Power Supply: The unit requires a separate fused circuit with a disconnect switch for line voltage power supply. All electrical work must conform to local codes and ordinances, and in the United States, with the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70-1990 or current edition.
  • Voltage Conversion: 230V units can be converted to 208V by re-connecting the 24V control transformer wire from the "240V" terminal to the "208V" terminal.

    • AMMK20AHB (14.4 KW): 56.9°F @ 800 CFM, 20.7°F @ 2200 CFM.
  • Filter Sizes: Recommended filter sizes are provided for various nominal tons of air conditioning, based on nominal air flow (CFM) and surface area for disposable and cleanable filters. For example, a 2-ton unit (700-900 CFM) requires a 400 sq. in. (20x25) disposable filter or a 246 sq. in. (15x20) cleanable filter.
  • Blower Speed Tap Settings: The manual provides recommended blower speed tap settings (MED, LOW, MED HI, HI) for 10 SEER 2, 2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2, 4, and 5 TON units.

Usage Features:

  • Clearances: Minimum clearances from adjacent structures (30" for blower and electrical access panels, 48" between overhang and top of unit, 10" around condenser coil area) must be maintained for adequate air circulation and service access.
  • Ductwork: Ductwork, supply registers, and return air grilles must be designed and sized to handle the unit's cooling air volume requirements. Maximum recommended velocity in trunk ducts is 1000 ft/min, and in branches, 800 ft/min.
  • Thermostat: The thermostat's location significantly impacts unit operation. Proper connection instructions are provided. The heat anticipator of the thermostat should be set to the proper value (e.g., .18 for AMMK05AHB/A, .36 for AMMK07AHB/A, AMMK10AHB/A, AMMK15AHB/A, and .54 for AMMK20AHB/A).
  • Time Delay Operation (Heater): Heater elements are switched ON/OFF via controls with time delays. The first heater bank and indoor blower are energized 1-20 seconds after thermostat contact closure, with remaining banks energized approximately 70 seconds later.
  • Staging (Heater): Electric heaters larger than 6 kW may require staging, turning on in 5 or 10 kW increments. Outdoor thermostats can be used for staging based on heat loss or demand.
  • Defrost Control: The defrost control board has a jumper plug for setting defrost intervals at 30, 60, or 90 minutes, or a TEST mode.
  • Scroll Anti-Cycle Timer: Single-phase units with scroll compressors may have an anti-cycle device to delay compressor start after a power interruption, equalizing pressure and preventing reverse rotation.
  • Loss of Charge Pressure Switch: Scroll compressor bearing units are equipped with a low pressure switch on the liquid line to prevent system damage from a loss of charge.

Maintenance Features:

  • Yearly Maintenance: As a condition for warranty coverage, the unit must receive yearly maintenance by a dealer, with satisfactory proof of service required.
  • Filter Installation: All return air must pass through a field-supplied filter. Filters should be installed correctly, with the airflow direction towards the blower motor. The unit should NOT be operated without all filters in place.
  • Ductwork Insulation: Ductwork installed outdoors should have a minimum of 2" (51mm) fiberglass insulation with a weatherproof vapor barrier. Ductwork in attics or other exposed areas should have a minimum of 2" (51mm) fiberglass insulation with an indoor type vapor barrier.
  • Access Panels: The blower/electrical access panel needs to be removed for various installation and maintenance procedures, including wiring connections and heater installation.
  • Electrical Checks: Before starting the unit, a final wiring check is required to ensure correct wiring and protection from mechanical damage. Any unusual sparking, odors, or noises during operation should prompt an immediate power shut-off and re-check for errors.
  • Temperature Rise Check: The temperature rise through the unit should be checked and adjusted by changing the heating speed tap at the blower terminal block if necessary. The maximum outlet air temperature is 200°F (93.35°C), and the maximum temperature rise for electric heat is 60°F (33.35°C).
  • Corrosive Atmosphere: Do NOT operate the unit in a corrosive atmosphere containing chlorine, fluorine, or any other corrosive chemicals.
  • Cooling Operation Temperature: Do NOT operate the unit on cooling when the outdoor temperature is below 60°F to prevent compressor damage.
