Questions and Answers

Overview

The device described in this manual is a gas-fired water heater, specifically the "CAESAR 14 3 E" and "Super CAESAR 17 3 E" models, manufactured by Immergas. Its primary function is to produce domestic hot water. The appliance is designed for wall installation and is suitable for use in various environments, including outdoors in partially protected areas or indoors, depending on the specific configuration.

Function Description

The water heater operates by heating water to below boiling temperature at atmospheric pressure. It can be connected to a DHW (Domestic Hot Water) distribution network. The appliance features a sealed combustion chamber and is fan-assisted, ensuring efficient air intake and flue gas exhaust. It is designed to operate with both methane gas (G20) and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), with conversion kits available for switching between gas types.

The control panel allows users to manage the water heater's operation. It includes an On/Stand-by/Off button, a Reset button, and a temperature selector. Users can regulate the DHW temperature according to their needs. The display shows the current water temperature, flame presence, and output efficiency. The water heater automatically ignites when there is a demand for hot water. If ignition does not occur within 10 seconds, it enters an "ignition block" state, indicated by an error code.

The device incorporates several safety features. An overtemperature thermostat prevents excessive internal overheating. A flue pressure switch monitors the intake and exhaust pipes, detecting blockages or fan faults. The appliance also includes an anti-freeze protection system, which, when properly installed with an optional kit, protects the water heater down to -15°C, provided it remains connected to the electricity supply and the anti-freeze components are functional.

The water heater is equipped with an "Information menu" that allows users to view various functioning parameters such as instant DHW flow rate, inlet and outlet water temperatures, and the set temperature. It also features a "Solar function" which is always active, allowing the water heater to receive pre-heated water from solar panel systems. In this scenario, the water heater will not switch on if the inlet water temperature is already at or above the set value. A "Solar panels coupling function" is available, requiring a mixing valve upstream to ensure optimal performance when integrated with solar systems.

An automatic slow ignition function with timed ramp delivery ensures a smooth ignition phase. The burner ignites at a pre-set ignition power value and then gradually increases the gas supply based on DHW withdrawal, preventing abrupt changes and ensuring consistent operation.

Usage Features

To use the water heater, users must ensure the DHW inlet valve is open and the gas cock upstream is open. The appliance is turned on by pressing the On/Stand-by/Off button until the display activates. The DHW temperature can then be adjusted using the temperature selector. The display provides real-time information on the water heater's status.

The water heater can be set to "Stand-by" mode, where it remains powered but inactive, or completely "Off," where it is still live but no functions are active. For prolonged periods of non-use, it is recommended to disconnect the external omnipolar switch and close the gas cock.

In case of anomalies, the water heater signals them by flashing error codes on the display, which are listed in the manual for troubleshooting. Common issues include ignition block, overtemperature thermostat block, domestic hot water probe anomalies, flue gas pressure switch failure, parasite flame, control panel anomalies, and low power supply voltage. Many of these can be reset using the Reset button, but persistent issues require professional assistance.

The appliance is designed for compatibility with Immergas flue systems, which are essential for proper operation. Different installation configurations (Type B for open chamber and forced draught, Type C for sealed chamber) are supported, each with specific requirements for air intake and flue gas exhaust. The manual provides detailed instructions for installing various kits, including horizontal intake-exhaust kits, vertical kits with aluminum tiles, and separator kits, to adapt to different installation scenarios.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the water heater's optimal safety, performance, and operational characteristics over time. The manual recommends yearly servicing by professionally qualified heating/plumbing technicians.

Key maintenance tasks include:

  • Cleaning and Maintenance: The appliance casing should be cleaned with damp cloths and neutral detergent. Flammable substances or abrasive cleaners should not be used.
  • Yearly Appliance Check: This involves a comprehensive inspection by a qualified technician, including:
    • Cleaning the flue side of the heat exchanger and the main burner.
    • Visually checking the flue hood for deterioration or corrosion.
    • Checking correct lighting and operation.
    • Checking correct burner calibration.
    • Verifying the correct operation of control and adjustment devices, such as the functioning selector, domestic hot water control thermostat, and the device against no gas ionisation flame control.
    • Ensuring the internal system is properly sealed.
    • Visually checking for water leaks or oxidation from/on connections.
    • Checking the condition and integrity of the electrical system, including power cables and connections, to ensure no blackening or burning.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues like gas leaks, ignition failures, irregular combustion, frequent overheating, and low water flow. For issues like lime scale buildup, descaling by a qualified technician using non-corrosive descalers is recommended.
  • Casing Removal: The casing can be completely removed to facilitate maintenance, by loosening lower screws, widening the sides, pulling the casing forward, and pushing it upwards from the upper hooks.
  • Gas Type Conversion: If the water heater needs to be converted to a different gas type, a specific conversion kit must be used, and the operation must be performed by a qualified technician. This involves replacing burner injectors, selecting the gas parameter type via the control panel, adjusting heat output, and sealing gas flow rate devices.
  • Decommissioning: In the event of permanent shutdown, professional staff should be contacted to ensure proper disconnection of electrical, water, and gas supply lines.

The manufacturer emphasizes that installation and maintenance must comply with current regulations and manufacturer instructions, and only professionally qualified staff should perform these tasks to ensure safety and validate the warranty.
