Overview

The Intex Krystal Clear™ Sand Filter Pump, certified model number SF40110, is designed to remove suspended particles from above-ground pools, contributing to clear and hygienically clean water. It is important to note that while the sand filter removes particles, it does not sanitize the pool, and proper pool chemistry management is still required.

Function Description:

The sand filter pump operates by circulating pool water through a sand media, which traps suspended particles. The system features a 4-way valve that allows for various operational modes:

  • FILTER: This is the normal filtration mode for regular vacuuming and maintaining clear water. Water flows from the pump through the filter media to the pool.
  • BACKWASH: This mode reverses the water flow to clean the filter media, directing the dirty water from the pump through the filter media to a waste/drain outlet. This is crucial for maintaining filter efficiency and is recommended when the pressure gauge indicates a rise in pressure or when the flow diminishes.
  • RECIRCULATE: This mode circulates water back to the pool without passing it through the filter media, useful for distributing chemicals without filtering.
  • DRAIN: This mode allows for vacuuming directly to waste, lowering the pool level, or draining the pool, bypassing the filter media entirely.

The pump is equipped with a control panel featuring an ON/OFF button, a LOCK/UNLOCK button, and a TIMER button. The LED display shows operating hours, allowing users to program the pump for specific durations (1 to 12 hours per cycle) or to run it continuously ("FP" mode). A power-saving mode is also integrated, where the system enters stand-by after a cycle and automatically turns back on in 24 hours.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power: 110-120 Volt AC, 0.8 A
  • Maximum Working Pressure: 1.0 bar (15 psi)
  • Effective Filtering Area: 0.03 m² (0.35 ft²)
  • Maximum Flow Rate: 2 m³/h (550 GPH)
  • Recommended Filtering Media (Not included): No. 20 silica sand or glass sand. Particle size range 0.45 to 0.85 mm (0.018 to 0.033 inches). Uniformity Coefficient less than 1.75.
  • Recommended Filtering Media Quantity: 6.5 Kg (14.5 Lbs) of No. 20 silica sand or 5.0 Kg (11 Lbs) of glass sand.
  • Mounting: The system must be installed on a solid, level, and vibration-free base, protected from weather, moisture, flooding, and freezing temperatures. The pump motor requires free air circulation for cooling. For some regions, securing the product to the ground or a permanent upright base is required, using two bolts and lock nuts (6.4 mm diameter, spaced 163 mm apart).
  • Electrical Safety: The unit is provided with a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) and must be connected to a grounding type receptacle. Extension cords, timers, plug adaptors, or converter plugs should not be used. The pool must be installed no closer than 6 feet (1.8 m) from any electrical outlet.

Usage Features:

  • Setup: Assembly requires one Phillips screwdriver. Sand loading involves carefully pouring the recommended sand into the tank, ensuring the center pipe and filter grid assembly remain centered. The sand should be filled between the "MAX" and "MIN" marked gauge on the center pipe. The 4-way valve is then installed, ensuring proper alignment and secure clamping. Hose connections are made between the pump motor inlet, the 4-way valve water outlet, and the pool's strainer and inlet nozzle. A third hose connection on the 4-way valve (drain/waste outlet) should be directed to a proper draining receptacle.
  • Initial Startup: Before operation, all hoses must be securely connected, and the correct amount of filter sand loaded. Air must be released from the system by unscrewing the air release valve until water flows out. The initial operation involves a "BACKWASH" cycle to remove impurities and fine sand particles from the new sand media. The pump should be off when changing the 4-way valve position, and the valve handle must be depressed before turning to prevent damage.
  • Timer Mode: The pump can be programmed to operate for a set number of hours (1-12) each day, automatically activating at the same time. The keypad controls can be locked to prevent unauthorized changes.
  • Manual Mode: The pump can also be run continuously without the timer by selecting the "FP" mode.
  • Pool Compatibility: This product is for use with storable pools only, not permanently-installed pools. Operating time tables are provided for various Intex and non-Intex above-ground pool sizes, indicating recommended daily operating hours.

Maintenance Features:

  • Backwashing: Regular backwashing is essential to clean the filter media. The frequency depends on pool usage, dirt levels, and the pressure gauge reading. When the pressure gauge indicates the yellow zone, it's time to backwash.
  • Pool Chemistry: The sand filter pump works in conjunction with proper pool chemistry. Daily pH checking and chemical treatment (chlorine, algaecide) are crucial for clear and hygienic water. Concentrated chlorine solutions should be handled carefully to avoid damaging the pool liner.
  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive troubleshooting guide addresses common issues such as the motor failing to start, poor filtration, slow flow, pump not working, valve/cover leaks, hose leaks, timer inaccuracies, pressure gauge malfunction, sand flowing back into the pool, and air jet valve leaks. Solutions range from checking electrical connections and hose clamps to cleaning strainers, backwashing, or contacting customer service.
  • Long Term Storage & Winterization: For long-term storage or winterization, the unit should be switched off, disconnected from power, and all hoses and strainers removed. The drain valve cap should be unscrewed to thoroughly drain the tank. The pump motor should be disassembled from the tank base, and all components allowed to air dry. O-rings should be coated with petroleum jelly. The 4-way valve handle should be depressed and set to the "N" position to allow water to drain. All dry pieces and the pump motor should be stored in original packaging in a dry place with temperatures between 0°C (32°F) and 40°C (104°F). The tank should be covered with a tarpaulin or plastic sheet. Allowing water to freeze will damage the sand filter and void the warranty.
