Status of worn Main causes and locations to inspect
1
Spot worn is generated with
a bias to the shoulders, and
in the worst cases, the tire
can become polygon-
shaped.
The tire wheel is not a true circle and is deformed.
The hub or knuckle is not a true circle or is deformed.
Considerable play in the hub bearing or lower link ball joint
Rotating parts are unbalanced.
2 Tread worn only on one side
Rotating parts are unbalanced.
The tire or wheel is not a true circle.
The hub or knuckle is not a true circle or is deformed.
3 Partial tread worn.
If there is spot worn caused by sudden braking or sudden turning, that will lead to
partial tread worn.
4
Shoulder worn
Normally, worn occurs on
the outer shoulder portion.
Camber or toe-in problem
Shoulder worn is caused by repeated and sudden cornering.
5
Symmetrical worn of the
shoulder
The tire or wheel is not a true circle or is deformed.
Considerable play in the hub bearing or lower link ball joint
6 Shoulder worn Insufficient air pressure.
7
Feather-like threads worn
only on one side
Worn is caused by repeated sudden cornering.
Camber or toe-in problem
Note:
・ The same types of worn patterns occur
because of worn of the suspension parts,
alignment problems of the wheels or tires, and
other suspension problems.
・ Waddling phenomenon of radial tires
The waddling phenomenon is when the front and back
ends of the vehicle sway from left to right. The cause is
that the tire's steel belt is not straight, or the tires or
wheels are not symmetrical horizontally. This is
particularly notable at slow speeds, and the stability of
the vehicle becomes extremely poor when traveling at
high speeds.
Put the vehicle through a road test and verify the tire with
the problem.
Note:
・ Pulling phenomenon of radial tires
The pulling phenomenon is when the vehicle does not
stay in a straight line even on a flat road while no
pressure is being applied to the steering wheel. The
following are causes.
Physical structure of the tire
Uneven brake adjustment
Poor wheel alignment.
If the pulling phenomenon of radial tires is found, repair
according to the radial tire pull repair chart.
