1-72. Head Lamp s
Each sealed beam head lamp can only be replaced
as a complete unit. Ei t her 5000-series (early
production) or the newer 6000-series sealed beam
units may be used. However , both head lamps on
a vehicle should be of the same series as the method
of aiming each series is different. If the two lamps
cannot be matched as to series, aim each lamp
according to the instructions for aiming that series

iv en below .
Note: 6000-se ries lamps have a figure "2" molded
int o the glass at the top of the lens , whereas 5000-
series lamps do not have any figure. S er ies refer s
to t he lamp trade numb e rs; for example, trad e
number 5400S is a 5000-series lamp.

1- 73. Head Lamp Aimin g
All 5000-series lamps must be aimed · on the high
beam. All 6000-series la mps mus t be aimed on th e
low beam . L amps may be aim ed either with
mechanical aimers or by using a sc reen . If me -
ch anical ai mers are used , foll ow instructions su p-
plied with th e aiming equipment. If a screen is to
be used, preparation for aiming is as fo ll ows:
a. Locat e the vehicle in a darkened area with a
level floor area and w ith a screen (may be a wall)
having a nonrefl ecti ng white surface. A ref ere n ce
line should be marked on the floor 25 fe et [7 ,62 m.)
away from and parallel to the sc re en. P o siti on the
vehicle perpendicular to the screen and with the
front he ad lamps directly over the reference line.
b. Locate the middle tape on the · screen so th at
it is aligned with the ce nt er line of the vehicle.
c. Equalize all tire pressures.
d . Rock the vehicle from side to side to equali ze
springs and s ho ck absorbers .
e. Measure th e distan ce between vehicle head lamp
ce nt er s. Then, pos iti on ma rker tapes vertic a lly on
the scree£! to the righ t and lef t of the middle tape
at half this distance.
f. Measure th e dista - nce from the center of each
lamp to the surf ace on which the vehicle rests.

1-74. Aiming 5000-series H ea d Lamp s
a . Turn the headlights on high beam. Cov er t he
l amp not being ai med. Be sure to use th e horizonta l
reference line on the scr een that is 2" lower th an
th e vehicle lamp height.
b . Turn the vertical aimi ng sc r ew, located at the
top of the lamp housin g; count erclockwise until
the lamp beam is c on s ider a bly lower than the
horizontal reference line on the screen. Th en , turn
the same s cr ew clockwise until the center of high
intensity coincides with the refere nc e line. See Fig.
170. .
Note : Always bring the beam into final position
by turning both aiming screws clockwise so that
the unit is held under prop er tension when the .
operation is · comp l ete.
