PERSONAL CD PLAYER
INSTRUCTION MANUAL
DEAR JENSEN CUSTOMER
Selecting fine audio equipment such as the unit you've just purchased is only
the start of your musical enjoyment. Now it's time to consider how you can
maximize the fun and excitement your equipment offers. This manufacturer and
the Electronic Industries Association's Consumer Electronics Group want you to
get the most out of your equipment by playing it at a safe level. One that lets
the sound come through loud and clear without annoying blaring or distortion
and, most importantly, without affecting your sensitive hearing.
Sound can be deceiving. Over time your hearing "comfort level" adapts to
higher volumes of sound. So what sounds "normal" can actually be loud and
harmful to your hearing. Guard against this by setting your equipment at a safe
level BEFORE your hearing adapts.
To establish a safe level:
Start your volume control at a low setting.
Slowly increase the sound until you can hear it comfortably and clearly, and
without distortion.
Once you have established a comfortable sound level:
Set the dial and leave it there.
Taking a minute to do this now will help to prevent hearing damage or loss in
the future. After all, we want you listening for a lifetime.
We Want You Listening For a Lifetime
Used wisely, your new sound equipment will provide a lifetime of fun and
enjoyment. Since hearing damage from loud noise is often undetectable until it
is too late, this manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association's
Consumer Electronics Group recommend you avoid prolonged exposure to
excessive noise.

Overview

The Jensen CD-36 is a personal CD player designed for portable audio enjoyment, offering a blend of essential functions and user-friendly features. It allows users to listen to their favorite compact discs on the go, providing a straightforward and reliable audio experience.

Function Description

The primary function of the Jensen CD-36 is to play standard compact discs. It supports basic playback operations such as play, pause, stop, and track navigation (next/previous). The device also incorporates various playback modes to enhance the listening experience, including normal playback, repeat (single track or all tracks), random play, and an introductory scan mode that plays the first 10 seconds of each track. An LCD display provides visual feedback on the current track number, playing time, and selected playback modes. For power, the unit can operate on two 1.5V DC 'AA' size alkaline batteries, making it highly portable, or it can be powered by an optional AC adaptor (4.5VDC/700mA). The device is equipped with a 3.5mm headphones jack for private listening.

Usage Features

  • Simple Controls: The CD-36 features clearly labeled buttons for all essential functions: Play/Pause, Stop, Next, Previous, Mode, and Program. A Volume Control dial allows for easy adjustment of the audio output level. The CD LID button facilitates opening the disc compartment.
  • Power Management: The player includes an auto power-off function that automatically switches off the unit approximately 30 seconds after a disc has finished playing or when the CD lid is opened. This feature helps conserve battery life. When an AC adaptor is connected, the batteries are automatically disconnected, and the player operates on adaptor power. Upon unplugging the adaptor, the player seamlessly switches back to battery power.
  • Battery Care: The manual emphasizes proper battery installation and care, advising against mixing old and new batteries, different battery types (alkaline, standard, rechargeable), and leaving batteries in the unit for extended periods to prevent damage from leakage.
  • Safety Precautions: The device incorporates safety measures, including a Class 1 laser product warning, advising users not to disassemble the casing or touch the lens. It also cautions against inserting objects into the safety slot, which could activate the laser diode.
  • Hearing Safety: Jensen strongly advises users to set the volume at a safe level to prevent hearing damage. It recommends starting with a low volume and gradually increasing it until the sound is comfortable and clear, without distortion.
  • Portability: Its compact design and battery operation make it ideal for personal, on-the-go use. The inclusion of stereo earbuds further enhances its portability.
  • Playback Modes:
    • Normal Playback: Plays the entire disc and stops after the last track.
    • Repeat 1: Repeats the current track.
    • Repeat All: Repeats all tracks on the disc.
    • Introductory Scan: Plays the first 10 seconds of each track, allowing users to preview songs.
    • Random Play: Plays all tracks on the disc in a random sequence.
    • Programmed Play: Users can program up to 20 tracks to be played in a desired order. This feature is accessible in either STOP or normal play mode.
  • LCD Display Information: The display shows the total number of tracks and total playing time upon initial startup. During play mode, it displays the current track number and instant playing time. In pause mode, the playing time flashes. A flashing battery indicator alerts users when batteries need to be changed.

Maintenance Features

  • Cabinet Cleaning: The cabinet can be cleaned with a soft cloth. For very dirty surfaces, a weak solution of neutral detergent and water can be used, followed by wiping clean.
  • Lens Cleaning: The lens is a critical component, and a dirty lens can cause sound skipping or prevent the CD from working. Users are advised not to touch the lens with their fingers or press down on the lens assembly to avoid damage. To clean the lens, a camera lens brush/blower should be used to gently blow away dust, followed by lightly wiping with the brush if necessary, and then blowing once more.
  • Disc Cleaning: Dirty discs should be cleaned with a cleaning cloth, wiping from the center outwards. The manual specifically warns against using solvents such as benzene, petrol, thinner, or commercially available cleaners and anti-static sprays intended for analogue discs, as these can damage the disc.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section to help users diagnose and resolve common issues such as the player failing to function, no sound from headphones, or intermittent sound. It provides a list of potential causes and solutions, such as checking disc insertion, battery status, lid closure, and headphone connection. For more complex issues, a customer service contact number is provided.
  • Battery Removal for Storage: If the unit is not to be used for an extended period, batteries should be removed to prevent leakage and potential damage to the unit, which could void the warranty. Similarly, the AC adaptor should be unplugged from the wall outlet by grasping the main body, not by pulling the cord.
