Why DAMA in Kantronics units?
Kantronics units have long been popular TNCs in Europe. As the European channels have become
more and more crowded and more and more DAMA systems have been established, it has become
a necessity for TNCs to be equipped with the DAMA slave protocol in order to use the local net-
works. DAMA was added to our TNCs to enable our European customers to continue to use and
enjoy their Kantronics TNCs.
How is DAMA implemented in Kantronics TNCs?
Only the DAMA slave mode has been implemented. Two commands have been added to the firm-
ware to enable users who need to work within a DAMA system to do so. All other commands and
operations remain unchanged.
New Commands:
DAMA ON|OFF {default OFF}
When ON the TNC can operate as a DAMA slave station once connection is established with a
DAMA master station. When OFF the TNC operates in standard CSMA (Carrier Sense Multiple Ac-
cess) mode.
DAMACHCK
n
(
n
= 0 to 225) {default 18}
This command sets a DAMA timeout timer in 10-second increments. If the TNC is connected to a
DAMA station (that is, operating in DAMA slave mode) and the master does not poll the TNC for
data before the DAMACHCK timer expires, the TNC will revert to CSMA operation and disconnect
from the DAMA master. This command was added to allow the user to regain CSMA connect capa-
bility in the event the DAMA master fails to poll because of a node failure - lightning strike, power
outage, etc.
