Overview

The provided document outlines the software update procedure for the Kawai NV5 hybrid piano, covering system and touchscreen software updates, as well as troubleshooting common issues.

Function Description

The Kawai NV5 is a hybrid piano, combining acoustic piano action with digital sound technology. This document specifically details the process for updating its internal software, which includes both the core system software and the software for its LCD touchscreen. Software updates are crucial for maintaining optimal performance, introducing new features, and resolving potential bugs. The update process is divided into three stages:

  1. System software update: This stage updates the core operating system of the NV5, which governs the instrument's fundamental functions and sound engine.
  2. LCD touchscreen software update (Stage 1): This stage updates a part of the software responsible for the functionality and display of the NV5's touchscreen interface.
  3. LCD touchscreen software update (Stage 2): This final stage completes the update of the touchscreen software, ensuring full functionality and potentially enhancing the user interface.

The update process is designed to be performed by the user, requiring a computer with internet access and a USB memory device.

Important Technical Specifications

While the document does not explicitly list the NV5's full technical specifications, it provides crucial details related to the software update process:

  • Software Update Files: The update package consists of three .SYS files:
    • NVxx_P05.SYS: System software (approximately 3,200 KB).
    • CAx8Lapp.SYS: Touchscreen software (approximately 17,588 KB).
    • CAx8Sapp.SYS: Touchscreen software (approximately 208 KB).
  • USB Memory Device Requirements:
    • Must be empty and formatted to either FAT or FAT32 filesystem.
  • Update Duration:
    • Total update time can be up to 2 hours.
    • System software update (Stage 1): Approximately 2 minutes.
    • LCD touchscreen software update (Stage 2, part 1): Approximately 10 minutes.
    • LCD touchscreen software update (Stage 3, part 2): Approximately 120 minutes.
  • Software Version Checking: The instrument allows users to check both the system software version (e.g., V1.02f) and the touchscreen software version (e.g., 1.0.1) directly on the LCD display. This is critical for determining which update stages are necessary.

Usage Features

The document focuses on the usage features related to the software update process:

  • Pre-update Preparation: Users must download a zip file containing the update files and extract them to a temporary folder on a computer.
  • USB Device Formatting: The USB memory device must be formatted to FAT or FAT32 to ensure compatibility with the NV5.
  • File Transfer: The specific .SYS update files must be copied to the root folder of the formatted USB memory device for each respective update stage.
  • Initiating Updates:
    • System Software Update: Requires the instrument to be off. Users must press and hold the left and right pedals, then press the POWER button. Once the KAWAI logo appears, they must press and hold the uppermost E, G, and B keys.
    • Touchscreen Software Update: Requires the instrument to be off. Users must press and hold the left and right pedals, then press the POWER button. Once the KAWAI logo appears, they must press and hold the uppermost C, A, B, and C keys.
  • On-screen Prompts: The NV5's LCD display provides clear instructions and status messages during the update process, including "Firmware program Update," "Flash Programming," "Writing," "Boot End," and "Update successful!"
  • User Interaction: For touchscreen updates, users are prompted to tap an "[Update Now]" button to initiate the process.
  • Power Cycle: After each successful update stage, users are instructed to disconnect the USB device and press and hold the POWER button for 7 seconds to turn off the instrument.
  • Version Checking: The NV5 provides a method to check the current system and touchscreen software versions, allowing users to determine if an update is necessary or if specific stages can be skipped (e.g., if the touchscreen software is already v1.0.2 or higher, stages 2 & 3 can be skipped).
  • Data Preservation Warning: The software update will clear any user-recorded songs. Users are advised to use the "Save Song" function to back up recordings to a USB memory device before proceeding with the update.

Maintenance Features

The document highlights maintenance aspects primarily through its troubleshooting section:

  • Error Messages: The NV5 displays specific error messages if issues occur during the update:
    • "USB device not found.": Indicates the instrument cannot detect the USB memory device.
    • "The update file could not be found.": Indicates the instrument cannot locate the necessary .SYS file on the USB device.
    • "The update file could not be read.": Indicates a problem reading the update file from the USB device.
  • Troubleshooting Steps: For each error, the document provides clear, actionable steps:
    • USB device not found: Check connection, verify the USB device is not broken, and confirm FAT/FAT32 formatting.
    • Update file not found: Verify the correct .SYS file is in the root folder of the USB device and remove any other files/folders as a precaution.
    • Update file not read: Turn off the instrument, remove the USB device, and restart the update process from the "Connect the USB memory device" step.
  • Restarting Failed Updates: If an update stage is unsuccessful, users are instructed to restart from the beginning of that stage.
  • Preventive Measures: Users are explicitly warned not to disconnect the USB memory device or turn off the instrument while an update is in progress, as this could lead to data corruption or system instability.
  • Regular Updates: The document implies that regular software updates are a part of routine maintenance to ensure the NV5 operates with the latest features and fixes.
