Overview

This document is an operator's manual for the KUHN GMD2810-FF Disc Mower. It provides comprehensive information on the machine's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The KUHN GMD2810-FF disc mower is designed for mowing on hay fields, grass silage fields, and improved pastures for harvesting fodder to feed livestock. It is a robust agricultural implement that attaches to a tractor's three-point linkage. The machine features a cutterbar with multiple rotating discs, each equipped with knives, to efficiently cut forage crops. Its design incorporates safety features and adjustments for optimal performance in various field conditions.

Important Technical Specifications

The GMD2810-FF is a 3-point linkage, Category 2 attachment. It features 6 discs, providing a working width of 2.66 m (8'9"). In its working position, the machine has a width of 4.87 m (16'), a height of 1.33 m (4'4"), and a length of 1.41 m (4'7"). For transport, its dimensions are: width 1.79 m (5'10"), height 1.90 m (6'3"), and length 4.21 m (13'10"). The disc rotational speed is 2986 min⁻¹, and the PTO speed is 540 min⁻¹. The machine's ground weight is 760 kg (1675 lb), and it requires a minimum PTO power of 36 kW (49 hp). Sound levels at the driver's seat (closed cabin) are 75.5 dB(A) for the tractor only and 82.2 dB(A) for the tractor + machine assembly.

Usage Features

The manual details the coupling and uncoupling procedures for the machine, emphasizing safety precautions such as checking the tractor's authorized gross weight, lift capacity, and maximum weight per axle. It highlights the importance of lower link stabilizers and a double-acting hydraulic outlet with float position on the tractor. The machine's hydraulic suspension circuit is factory-pressurized, and specific instructions are given for connecting hydraulic hoses and the 7-pin electrical plug for signaling equipment.

Adjustments for working position include setting the lower link length to achieve a desired cutting height, typically between 30 and 60 mm (1.2" - 2.4"). The maximum cutting height (L1) is 60 mm (2.4") when discs are parallel to the ground, and the minimum cutting height (L2) should not be below 30 mm (1.2"). Ground pressure adjustment is crucial for safety breakback and is controlled by modifying the hydro-pneumatic accumulator's pressure. Normal operating pressure is 78 bar (1131 psi), with a minimum of 67 bar (972 psi) and a maximum of 94 bar (1363 psi). The machine is equipped with a swathing system comprising two swath wheels, producing a swath width of approximately 1.7 m (5'7"). A minimum clearance of 15 mm (0.59") between the cone rib and the swath wheel is recommended.

For operation, the front guard should be lowered to reduce projection risks, and the tractor PTO should be engaged slowly, increasing speed up to 540 min⁻¹. The mowing unit lift cylinders are used to transition the machine from working to headland turn position. The forward speed should be adapted to working conditions.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides a detailed frequency chart for lubrication and maintenance tasks.

  • Lubrication:
    • Oil Change: The side angle gearbox requires 0.7 L (0.18 US gal) of SHELL SPIRAX A extreme-pressure oil (SAE 80W90, API GL5), or a synthetic equivalent. The central gearbox requires 2.3 L (0.6 US gal) of the same type of oil. Oil changes are recommended every 200 hours or at the end of the season.
    • Grease: Moving parts and pivot points, the cutterbar connecting frame pivot pin, the mowing unit pivot pin, and the mowing unit lift cylinder ball joint should be greased every 50 hours.
    • PTO Shaft: Primary PTO shaft universal joints (1) should be greased every 8 hours, transmission tube (2) every 20 hours, and guide rings (3) every 40 hours. Secondary PTO shaft universal joints (1), transmission tube (2), and guide rings (3) require lubrication every 250 hours.
  • Cutterbar: The cutterbar is lubricated for life and generally requires no periodic maintenance, but in case of doubt or oil leak, it should be fully drained and refilled with 3 L (0.79 US gal) of SHELL SPIRAX A and ASX 75W90 grade API extreme-pressure gear oil.
  • Hydro-pneumatic accumulators: These require no particular maintenance but should be checked regularly for tightness of fixing bolts and oil leaks. Instructions are provided for depressurizing the circuit before any work.
  • Knives and Fixing Elements: Knives should be inspected systematically before each use for damage or wear and replaced in pairs to maintain balance. Knife length C must exceed 65 mm (2.6"), and width B (measured 10 mm (0.4") from the disc edge) must exceed 20 mm (0.78"). The hole L for the securing bolt should not be oval by more than 22 mm (0.86"). Fixing bolts should be changed if there is visible distortion, worn locking compound, or if the bolt head wear reaches the center line of the bolt, or if diameter D of the bolt shoulder is less than 11 mm (0.43"). Torque for knife-fixing bolts is 12 daN m (89 lbf ft). Spring plates should be replaced if distorted or significantly worn (width B, measured at A=20mm (0.8"), must exceed 74mm (2.9") for coupling device (a), or 60mm (2.4") for coupling device (b)).
  • Disc Replacement: Procedures are outlined for replacing discs, ensuring correct direction of rotation and proper torque for bolts (12 daN m (89 lbf ft)). A minimum play of 1 mm (0.04") between the spring plate and cutter bar skids should be maintained, with spacers used if necessary.
  • Spring Plate Replacement: Instructions are provided for intermediate discs, while inner disc spring plate replacement must be carried out by an authorized Kuhn dealer.
  • Outer and Inner Cones: Attachment bolts (1) of outer and inner cone covers (2) and (3) should be torqued to 6 daN m (44 lbf ft), and any lost or damaged covers replaced.
  • Storage: At the end of each season, the machine should be cleaned, gearboxes drained and refilled, damaged paintwork touched up, and the machine stored in a dry place. Knives and bolts should be inspected and replaced if worn. All hydraulic functions should be depressurized. At the start of each season, the hydraulic circuit should be pressurized, the friction slip clutch checked, and all protection devices inspected.
