Whileitisimportanttoprotectles,data,andsettingsthatareontheharddiskdrive,youmightalso
needtoinstallanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyoursystemUEFIBIOS,or
recoverpreinstalledsoftware.Thisinformationwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithpropercareand
keepitintopworkingshape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem
Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsysteminyourcomputer,youneedtoinstalltheSupplementlesandThinkPad
devicedriversforitatthesametime.Thenecessarylesarelocatedinthefollowingdirectoriesofyour
harddiskdrive:
•TheSupplementlesfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory.
•ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
•ThepreloadedsoftwareapplicationsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Notes:
•Theprocessofinstallingthenewoperatingsystemdeletesallthedataonyourharddiskdrive,including
backupsorimagesthatwerestoredinahiddenfolderbyuseoftheRescueandRecoveryprogram.
•IfyoucannotndtheSupplementles,thedevicedrivers,andapplicationsoftwareyouneedonyour
harddiskdrive,orifyouwanttoreceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,refertothe
ThinkPadWebsiteathttp://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers.
Beforeyoubegin
Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•CopyallthesubdirectoriesandlesintheC:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoid
losinglesduringtheinstallation.
•Printtheinstructionsin“InstallingWindows7operatingsystem”onpage94.
Note:TheUEFIBIOSfeaturesaresupportedonlyonthe64-bitversionoftheWindows7operatingsystem.
IfyouwanttostarttheWindowsRecoveryEnvironment(WinRE)usingtheinstallationDVDofa64-bitversion
oftheWindowsoperatingsystem,youshouldnotchangetheinitialUEFI/LegacyBootsettinginThinkPad
Setup.TheUEFI/LegacyBootsettingmustbethesameasitwaswhentheWindowsOperatingsystem
imagewasinstalled.Otherwise,youwillseeanerror.
