Overview

The Levelpro 100 Series Submersible Pressure Sensors are designed for continuous level measurement in industrial applications, offering reliable and trouble-free service, particularly in challenging environments. These sensors measure the height of liquid above the sensing diaphragm, referencing atmospheric pressure.

Function Description:

The Levelpro Submersible Level Transmitters operate by measuring the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the liquid column above the sensor's diaphragm. This pressure is then converted into a 4-20mA two-wire current signal, which is proportional to the liquid height. The device incorporates a ceramic piezo-resistive sensing element for accurate measurements. A key feature is the integrated ventilation tube within the cable, which automatically compensates for changes in atmospheric pressure above the tank, ensuring accurate readings regardless of ambient pressure fluctuations. The sensor is designed to be fully submerged in the application fluid, either resting at the bottom of the tank or suspended at a desired level. The physical location of the transmitter dictates the lowest level of measurement. For instance, if mounted 2 feet from the tank bottom, the lowest reading will be 2 feet.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Measurement Principle: Ceramic piezo-resistive sensing element.
  • Output Signal: 4-20mA (2-wire system).
  • Supply Voltage: 12-36 VDC.
  • Housing Materials: Available in PVC, PVDF, PP, or 316 SS for excellent chemical compatibility.
  • Diaphragm: Large diameter, non-clogging, damage-resistant ceramic diaphragm.
  • Cable: High tensile strength FEP (Teflon) shielded and vented cable.
  • Seals: Kalrez O-ring seals.
  • Wetted Parts: Compatible with liquids (no solids or frozen media) as specified in the data sheet.
  • Pressure Range: Available in various nominal pressure ranges (e.g., 0-10 m WC, 0-14 ft, 0-20 ft, 0-33 ft).
  • Liquid Height Conversion:
    • 1 psi = 2.31 feet of water
    • 1 psi = 0.704 meters of water
  • Specific Gravity (SG) Impact: The transmitter's pressure reading is unaffected by SG, but the calculated liquid height will vary. Liquids with SG < 1.0 require a taller water column for the same pressure, while liquids with SG > 1.0 require a shorter column.
  • Panel Meter Configuration (Levelpro Series displays/controllers):
    • Input 1 (Empty Setting): 4.0 mA
    • Input 2 (Full Setting): 20.0 mA (though actual full tank current may be less than 20 mA depending on application range).
  • Environmental: Designed for continuous submersion. Outdoor installations may require overpressure protection for lightning or overpressure events.

Usage Features:

  • Robust Design: The large diameter flush diaphragm is non-clogging and resistant to damage from floating solids, making it suitable for demanding industrial applications.
  • Chemical Resistance: Available in multiple housing materials (PVC, PVDF, PP, 316SS) to ensure compatibility with a wide range of corrosive liquids.
  • Slim Design: Allows for installation in tight applications.
  • Easy Installation: The manual provides detailed steps for mechanical installation, including removing the protective cap and connecting the sensor to a junction box (LP100 Junction Box). The junction box features a 2" NPT thread for mounting, a liquid-tight connector, and a Gortex breather to allow air transfer while preventing moisture ingress.
  • Flexible Mounting: Can be suspended from its cable, rested on the tank bottom (horizontally or vertically), or hardwired using the LP100 conduit box.
  • Integration with Displays: Compatible with Levelpro Series level displays and controllers (e.g., TVL Series Level Process Display | Controller) for easy configuration and monitoring using linear SCALE functions.
  • Fail-Safe System Recommendation: For critical applications, Levelpro recommends using redundant backup systems and alarms to accommodate potential transmitter failure or power loss.
  • Application-Specific Considerations:
    • Avoid installing the transmitter where mixer blades or other tank requirements could cause it to move or swing. Consider a still well/drop tube for stability.
    • Ensure the junction box is clean, dry, and free of moisture, with a desiccant potentially provided.
    • The ventilation tube within the cable must remain open and unblocked to allow air flow to the pressure diaphragm.
    • Avoid installing the sensor directly on the tank bottom if sludge or debris is likely to accumulate, which could coat the transmitter and prevent accurate readings. Suspending the transmitter above the highest sludge level is recommended in such cases.
    • The transmitter is not position-sensitive.

Maintenance Features:

  • Low Maintenance: After final installation and setup, routine maintenance is generally not required.
  • Periodic Calibration Check: A periodic check of system calibration is suggested to ensure continued accuracy.
  • Inspection for Debris: Maintenance should include inspecting the transmitter for debris or coatings that might prevent liquid from freely entering and leaving the sensor. If found, the transmitter should be cleaned.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides steps for testing the transmitter, including verifying wiring, power supply, and loop resistance. If the transmitter is not functioning, it can be isolated from the system and tested with a digital multimeter; it should read 4mA when out of liquid.
  • Return and Repair Process: Before returning a device for recalibration, modification, or repair, it must be carefully cleaned. A notice of return with a detailed defect description and a declaration of decontamination (if hazardous substances were involved) must be enclosed. Levelpro will not initiate repair without an acceptable declaration of decontamination.
  • Warranty: A 12-month warranty from the date of sale covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. The warranty is voided by improper use, modifications, damage, or unauthorized repair. Damaged diaphragms are not covered.
