Preparations
The
following
tools are
recom-
mended
when operating
the
Frank
S.:
1. Fire
Extinguisher
-
A
fire extin-
guisher
should
be
immediatelY
available
whenever
the Frank
S.
is operated.
Also, wet towels
and
a
bucket of
water should
be avail-
able
for extinguishing
fires.
2. Butane
Fuel
-
The type used
to
refill cigarette
lighters.
The
gas
inlet of
the Frank S.'s
gas
reser-
voir f its butane
f
uel
canisters
from
the following
suppliers:
Braun, Bronica,
Crown,
Hudson,
lbelo,
Kawee, KBL,
Maruman,
Monic,
Myflam,
Penguin.
Prince,
Ronson,
Rowenta, Savineli
and
Win.
Butane
is
sold
in a
transpa-
rent cylinder
by
Bowenta.
This
makes it
possible
to see
how
much butane
is
injected
into the
gas
reservolr.
3.
Machine Oil
-
To be applied
to
friction
points
on
the axles,
side
rods and
links.
4. Steam
Cylinder
Oil
-
For cYlin-
der lubrication.
lf
steam
cylinder
oil
is not available,
automotive
motor oil
can be substituted.
5. Syringe
(included)
-
To feed
steam
cylinder
oil
into the oiltank
and
to remove oil
and
water from
the oil
tank.
Operation
Step
1:
Couple
the
Engine
and
Tender
(Figure
1)
Place the engine
and
tender on
your
track.
Push down
the coupling
Pin
with
your
finger, insert
the drawbar
into the
souare
hole of the
tender
and
remove
your
finger
to let the
pin
engage
the drawbar.
Check
for a
firm connection.
Distilled
Water
-
For use
in the
boiler.
Do not use
"city
or
"tap'
water
in the boiler
because
min-
erals
and other
materials
in such
water could
clog
the safety
valve
and steam
passages.
Measuring
Cup
(included)
-
To
measure
the amount
of
water fed
into the boiler.
''City'
or
"tap"
Water
-
For use
in
the
tender
water tank.
Matches
or Cigarette
Lighter
-
To ignite
the burner.
Screw
Driver
(included)
and
Wrenches
-
To tighten
loose
screws
and
nuts.
Burner
Nozzle
Cleaner
(in-
cluded)
-
To clean
the small
hole
in the burner
nozzle.
Gloves
(included)
-
To
Protect
your
hands
from burns.
Always
wear
gloves while handling
the
Frank
S.
when it is
in
operation.
Radio Control

Step
2:
Connectthe Gas
Hose
to the Burner
(Figure
2)
Fit
one end of
the
gas
hose to the
burner
nozzle
and the other end to
the
gas
regulator
pipe.
Fit the burner
into
the boiler.

Step 3:
Pour
Water into the
Boiler
(Figure
3)
Unscrew the water
plug
on top of the
steam dome,
just
behind the chim-
ney. Using the measuring
cup,
pour
about 170
to
180
mlof distilled water
into the boiler. The water
should ap-
pear
in
the water
gauge
2 to
3
mm
above the middle line
with 180 ml of
water
in the boiler.
Reattach the water
plug.

Note: If
there
is
more than 180 mlof
water in the
boiler,
there will
be not
be enough space for steam to be
generated
in the
boiler, and even if
the
pressure
gauge
indicates the
normal working
pressure,
the en-
gine
will not run.
Use a siphon to re-
move excess water from the
boiler.
