This document provides assembly instructions and safety warnings for a triple bunk bed, model number 7030-00425 KIT, manufactured by Living Spaces. The kit includes hardware for assembling a triple bunk bed, which is designed to accommodate three mattresses at different levels.
Function Description
The 7030-00425 KIT is a hardware kit for assembling a triple bunk bed. A triple bunk bed is a space-saving furniture solution designed to sleep three individuals in a vertical arrangement. It typically consists of three bed frames stacked one above the other, supported by a sturdy frame. This particular model is designed for use with two twin mattresses and one full mattress, or three twin mattresses, depending on the specific configuration chosen by the user. The bed is intended for indoor use in residential settings, providing sleeping arrangements for children or adults, with specific age restrictions for the upper bunk.
Important Technical Specifications
The hardware kit, MAS90: 5043-43325 (4176 BH TRIPLE BUNK HARDWARE KIT), includes the following components:
- 40 x 1/4 X 4 HEX LAG BLK: These are 1/4 inch by 4 inch black hex lag screws, used for securing the main structural components of the bunk bed.
- 40 x 3/16 USS FL WASHER BLK: These are 3/16 inch black USS flat washers, used in conjunction with the lag screws to distribute the load and prevent damage to the wood.
- 30 x 6 X 1 1/4 PHIL FLAT PARTICLE BOARD SCREW: These are #6 by 1 1/4 inch Phillips flat head particle board screws, used for attaching particle board components, likely the mattress supports or slats.
- 4 x 1/2 X 3 FLUTED DOWEL: These are 1/2 inch by 3 inch fluted wooden dowels, used for aligning and strengthening joints between wooden components, particularly when stacking the bunk bed sections.
The bed dimensions and mattress requirements are critical for safe operation:
- Twin Bed Mattress: Designed to use a mattress 37 ½”–38 ½” in width and 74" - 75" in length.
- Full Bed Mattress: Designed to use a mattress 52"- 54" in width and 74" - 75" in length.
- Total Mattress and Foundation Thickness: The combined thickness of the mattress and foundation (slat kit, bunk board, etc.) must not exceed 10 inches.
- Guardrail Clearance: There must be at least 5 inches from the mattress sleeping surface to the top edge of the guardrail.
- Safety Compliance: The bunk beds have been tested by an Independent Laboratory and are certified to be in compliance with ASTM F-1427, "Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bunk Beds,” and U.S. Government specifications 16 Code of Federal Regulations, parts 1213 and 1513.
Tools required for assembly include:
- 7/16" Wrench or Socket Wrench
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Recommended: Electric driver with 7/16" socket
Usage Features
The assembly process involves several key steps:
- Bottom Bunk Assembly: Attach four 5 1/4” Mattress Rails (E) to the posts of the Bottom ends (C) using 16 lag bolts and 16 washers. Ensure the posts (legs) have the dowel holes facing UP for this step.
- Top Bunk Assembly: Attach two 5 1/4" Mattress Rails (E) and four 3 1/2" Guard Rails (F) to the Top Ends (D) using 24 lag screws and 16 washers. Ensure the posts (legs) have the dowel holes facing DOWN for this step.
- Slat Kit Installation (Top Bunk): Roll out the Twin Slat Kit on the Support Cleats of the Mattress Rails on the Top Bunk assembly. Secure it with 4 Wood Screws at each end of the two outermost slats (one in each corner of the bed). Center the three individual slats in the 3 built-in gaps in the Slat Kit and secure them with 6 wood screws at each end of the individual slats.
- Bottom and Middle Bunk Slat Installation: Repeat step 3 for the bottom bunk, starting with the very bottom bed surface, at the floor. Then, repeat step 3 for the middle bed surface.
- Stacking the Bunks: Place the 4 Wood Dowels in the holes of the bottom bunk assembly. Lift the top assembly to stack it, ensuring the dowels slide into the holes at the bottom of the Top end assembly.
- Mattress Placement: Place a mattress not to exceed 7" thick in the bottom and middle bed surfaces, and not to exceed 10" in the top bed.
Safety Guidelines for Usage:
- Label Adherence: Follow all warnings attached to the upper bunk end structure and on the carton. Do not remove this label.
- Mattress Sizing: Always use the recommended size mattress or mattress support to prevent entrapment or falls.
- Guardrail Clearance: The surface of the mattress must be at least five inches (127mm) below the upper edge of the guardrails.
- Age Restriction: Children less than six years of age should not use the upper bunk.
- Prohibited Activities: Do not allow horseplay on or under the bed, prohibit jumping on the bed, and do not allow more than one person on the upper bunk.
- Entry/Exit: Always use the ladder or bed end for entering and leaving the upper bunk.
- Wall Placement: If the bunk bed is placed next to a wall, the full-length guardrail should be placed against the wall to prevent entrapment.
- Guardrails: Always use guardrails on both long sides of the upper bunk.
- Water/Flotation Mattresses: The use of water or sleep flotation mattresses is prohibited.
- Strangulation Hazard: Never attach or hang items (e.g., hooks, belts, jump ropes) to any part of the bunk bed not designed for such use.
Maintenance Features
Regular maintenance is crucial for the safety and longevity of the bunk bed:
- Periodic Checks: Periodically check and ensure that the guardrail, ladder, and other components are in their proper position, free from damage, and that all connectors are tight.
- Replacement Parts: Do not use substitute parts. Contact the manufacturer or dealer for replacement parts if needed.
- Future Reference: Keep the assembly and safety instructions for future reference.
The document also mentions that a foundation is required with a 3-slat configuration, implying that additional support may be needed depending on the mattress type or slat kit provided. The instructions illustrate how individual slats should be placed evenly in the gaps and underneath the strapping when used with a slat roll. For users opting for a bunkie board, the individual slats are installed for use with the bunkie board (sold separately). Similarly, for slat roll usage, the individual slats are installed for use with the slat roll (sold separately). Users are advised to see their retailer for the purchase of bunkie boards or slat rolls.
