Overview

The Smart™-DC series solar charge controller is an intelligent and programmable device specifically designed for boost mode LED solar street light systems. It offers a comprehensive set of features for efficient and reliable solar power management.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Smart™-DC series solar charge controller is to manage the charging of batteries from solar panels and control the output to LED loads, particularly in solar street light applications. It supports constant current output, which is crucial for consistent LED performance. The controller incorporates an adjustable 5-stage timer for load output, allowing for flexible lighting schedules. Human infrared induction is a key feature, enabling motion-triggered lighting adjustments for energy saving. It continuously monitors running status and parameters, providing valuable insights into system performance.

The controller is compatible with various battery types, including Gel, Liquid, AGM, and Lithium batteries, and automatically recognizes 12V/24V system voltages. It features automatic temperature compensation for Liquid and Gel batteries, optimizing charging in varying environmental conditions. The charging process involves four stages: fast, boost, equal, and float (for Liquid/Gel batteries), ensuring optimal battery health and longevity. A notable feature is its ability to automatically dim the load when battery voltage is low, with configurable dimming start voltage and percentage. For Lithium batteries, it includes auto-sleeping during transportation and can automatically activate the system if the Battery Management System (BMS) powers off due to Low Voltage Disconnect (LVD). Charging target and recovery voltages are also settable for Lithium batteries, along with a 0°C Charging Protection feature. The day/night threshold can be automatically adjusted, and the controller is configurable via an LCD remote programmer. Encased in a waterproof IP67, strong, and durable aluminum case, it offers full automatic electronic protection functions.

Usage Features:

  • Connection Sequence: The manual emphasizes connecting the load first, followed by the battery, and then the solar panel, with specific instructions for sealing connections.
  • Transportation Mode: The controller enters transportation mode (load off) after 5 minutes if only connected to the battery. It can also be manually set via the remote controller. Exiting this mode involves connecting the load and pressing the test key or connecting the solar panel for more than 1 second during daytime.
  • Remote Controller (S/SG-Unit): Used for setting controller parameters. The S-Unit sets one controller at a time, while the SG-Unit can set multiple controllers.
  • Reading Status and Parameters: The "Status" key on the S-unit allows reading real-time data such as battery voltage, load current/voltage, PV voltage/current, total generating capacity, over-discharge times, and fully charge times. The "Parameter" key reads setting parameters like timer stages, dimming percentages, day/night thresholds, and battery type.
  • Test Function: Pressing the "Test" key on the S-unit turns on the load for 30 seconds, useful for verifying installation or troubleshooting.
  • Self Test: Upon power-up, the controller performs a self-test routine before normal operation.
  • System Voltage Recognition: Automatically adjusts to 12V or 24V system voltage for Gel, Liquid, and AGM batteries. For Lithium batteries, the user sets the type.
  • 0°C Charging Protection (Lithium Battery): Configurable to "Yes" (normal charging), "Slow" (20% max charging current), or "No" (no charging) when ambient temperature is below 0°C.
  • Streetlight Function: For R series controllers with infrared sensing, work modes like "Five-stage Night Mode" or "TOT mode" utilize "DelayOff" and "Dim NP" settings.
    • Dusk to Dawn (D2D): If "Time1" is set to "D2D", the controller operates from dusk to dawn, with dimming settings still valid.
    • Five-stage Night Mode: Allows setting Time 1-5 and Dim 1-5 with the remote controller.
    • TOT Mode: If "Time4" is set to "TOT", the controller operates in TOT mode. This mode supports induction, allowing for dynamic dimming based on human presence.
  • Low Voltage Disconnect (LVD) & Reconnect (LVR): Automatically disconnects the load to prevent deep battery discharge and reconnects when the battery voltage recovers.
  • Day/Night Threshold & Delay: Recognizes day/night based on solar array open circuit voltage, with adjustable threshold and delay time.
  • Auto Dimming: Automatically dims the load when battery voltage drops below a set "Dim V", with the load current decreasing according to the set "Dim %".
  • Load and Sensor: Provides detailed connection diagrams for LED lights, specifying the number of parallel and series connections. The infrared sensor's sensitivity can be affected by the lampshade, temperature, and light conditions. Multiple inductive sensors should be spaced more than 3m apart to avoid false triggers.

Maintenance Features:

  • LED Indications: The controller uses Green, Yellow, and Red LEDs to indicate various statuses such as charging stages (fast, boost, equal, float), over-voltage protection, battery status (normal, low voltage), work status, output power, short circuit, over-current, over-temperature, open circuit, and transport mode.
  • Faults & Alarms: The manual details various faults and alarms, including low voltage protection, overcurrent/short circuit, over-temperature, high voltage at battery terminal, inability to recognize system voltage, low battery capacity, and PV panel fault/reverse connection. For each fault, a reason and a recommended remedy are provided.
  • Safety Instructions:
    • The controller is only for PV systems with solar panels meeting specifications.
    • Batteries store significant energy; avoid short-circuiting. An in-line fuse or circuit-breaker on the battery's positive wire, within 15cm of the terminal, is strongly recommended.
    • Batteries can produce flammable gases; avoid sparks and flames, and ensure proper ventilation.
    • Avoid touching or short-circuiting wires/terminals. Use isolated tools and work in a dry environment.
    • Keep children away from batteries and the charge controller.
    • Always remove errors before continuing to connect the controller.
  • Liability Exclusion: The manufacturer is not liable for damages resulting from improper use, neglect of battery manufacturer's recommendations, unauthorized service/repair, unusual use, incorrect setup, or bad system design.
