Overview

This document serves as an instruction manual for the Makita Cordless Grass Trimmer, model DUR192L, providing comprehensive guidance on its function, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Makita Cordless Grass Trimmer DUR192L is designed for cutting grass, weeds, bushes, and undergrowth. It is not intended for other purposes such as edging or hedge cutting. The tool operates with a loop handle and utilizes a nylon cutting head (string trimmer head) for trimming lawn grass. It features two speed modes: a high speed of 0-6,000 min⁻¹ and a low speed of 0-4,500 min⁻¹. The tool is powered by an 18V D.C. battery cartridge, with various compatible models listed, including BL1815N, BL1820B, BL1830B, BL1840B, BL1850B, and BL1860B. Charging is facilitated by compatible chargers such as DC18RC, DC18RD, DC18RE, DC18SD, DC18SE, DC18SF, and DC18SH. The tool also supports a recommended battery adapter, PDC01, for extended use.

The trimmer incorporates a tool/battery protection system that automatically cuts off power to the motor to extend both tool and battery life. This system activates under specific conditions, indicated by indicator lamps. Overload protection is triggered if the tool or battery is overloaded by entangled weeds or debris, if the cutting tool is locked, or if the main power button is turned on while the switch trigger is being pulled. In such cases, the indicator lamp blinks green. Overheat protection activates if the tool or battery cartridge becomes too hot, causing the tool to stop and the indicator lamp to light up red. Overdischarge protection stops the tool when the battery capacity is low, with the indicator lamp blinking red.

The tool features a main power switch to turn it on and off, and a lock-off lever to prevent unintentional starting. The speed can be adjusted by tapping the main power button, cycling through high and low speed modes. An electric brake system is also integrated, designed to quickly stop the tool after the switch trigger is released.

Usage Features

Before operation, users must read the instruction manual thoroughly to familiarize themselves with the tool's handling. It is crucial to ensure the tool is fully assembled and the battery cartridge is securely installed. The shoulder harness and hand grip should be adjusted to suit the operator's body size for comfort and to prevent fatigue. The cutting attachment, specifically the nylon cutting head, must be properly installed and secured, and the cutting attachment guard must always be in place. Metal and plastic blades are explicitly prohibited.

When operating, maintain a safe distance of at least 15 meters from bystanders and animals. The tool should be operated only under good visibility and daylight conditions, avoiding darkness, fog, or explosive atmospheres. Operators must wear personal protective equipment, including protective goggles, ear protection (ear muffs), and proper clothing such as a work overall and sturdy, non-slip shoes. Loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair should be secured to prevent entanglement with moving parts.

The tool should be held with both hands, firmly on the right-hand side, and swung evenly in half-circles from right to left, similar to using a scythe. Avoid overreaching and ensure secure footing, especially on slopes, and never work on a ladder or tree. Before starting, ensure the cutting tool is not touching the ground or other obstacles. If the cutting attachment hits hard objects, immediately stop the tool, remove the battery, and inspect for damage. The cutting attachment should be checked frequently for cracks or damage during operation and replaced if necessary. Never cut above waist height.

For the nylon cutting head (bump & feed type), the nylon cord is fed out by tapping the cutting head against the ground while rotating. If the cord does not feed out, it may need rewinding or replacement. The battery cartridge should be removed when the tool is left unattended, even for a short time, and before any adjustments or maintenance.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the safety and reliability of the tool. Before performing any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning, always ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed.

The tool should be cleaned by wiping off dust, dirt, or cut grass with a dry cloth or one dipped in soapy water and wrung out. It is important to remove any debris adhered to the tool's vent to prevent overheating. Gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, or similar substances should never be used for cleaning, as they can cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks in plastic components.

After each use, all screws and nuts should be tightened. Any maintenance or repair not described in the instruction manual should be performed by a Makita Authorized Service Center, using only genuine Makita replacement parts. The hex wrench used for installing/removing the cutting tool should be stored in its designated place on the tool when not in use to prevent loss or injury.

Battery cartridges should be charged before they are completely discharged, stopping operation when less tool power is noticed. Overcharging a fully charged battery should be avoided to prolong its service life. Charging should occur at room temperature (10 °C - 40 °C). If a battery cartridge is hot, it should be allowed to cool down before charging. When not in use for extended periods (more than six months), the battery cartridge should be charged. The battery cartridge should be removed from the tool or charger when not in use.

In case of any unusual conditions like noise or vibration during operation, the tool should be switched off, the battery cartridge removed, and the cause identified and resolved before further use. If the electric brake consistently fails to stop the tool quickly, it should be serviced by a service center.
