Overview

The Martin Audio DDX Series comprises high-performance loudspeakers designed for both permanent installations and portable sound systems. These loudspeakers are constructed from birch/poplar plywood and finished with a durable black textured paint, with a white option available to order.

Function Description:

The DDX Series includes full-range loudspeakers and a subwoofer. The full-range models utilize two-way, full-range, patent-protected coaxial differential dispersion drivers with an internal passive crossover for cost-effective and easy deployment. This coaxial differential dispersion technology is a unique feature of Martin Audio, designed to overcome the uneven frequency response issues common in non-coaxial systems due to interference between LF and HF sections. Unlike conventional coaxial devices where coverage angle reduces at higher frequencies, DDX devices use a static waveguide that seamlessly merges with the unique cone shape, maintaining a consistent dispersion pattern even at very high frequencies. The differential dispersion driver produces an asymmetric coverage pattern, offering wide coverage at the bottom of the vertical angle and narrower at the top. This design ensures more even sound distribution, covering a wider audience in the near field and projecting sound effectively to the rear of the space. The DDX118 subwoofer is equipped with a high-performance 18" driver in a cabinet tuned for optimal performance.

Usage Features:

  • Pole Mounting: DDX loudspeakers have integral 35mm pole mount "top hat" fittings for use with standard loudspeaker stands and accessories. The subwoofer's pole mount accommodates a distance pole for DDX full-range cabinets. When pole mounting, ensure the stand supports the loudspeaker's weight, is placed on a level surface with fully extended legs, and only one loudspeaker is placed per stand. Cables should be run to prevent trip hazards, and additional weight may be needed for outdoor use in windy conditions.
  • Stacking: When stacking, ensure the floor or stage is level and solid. Avoid stacking too high outdoors where wind could cause instability. High sound levels can cause loudspeakers to move, so friction material or strapping should be used to secure the stack.
  • Wall Mounting: DDX8, DDX10, and DDX12 models can be wall-mounted in either portrait or landscape orientation using Martin Audio wall brackets. The installation is a two-part process, allowing the wall section of the bracket to be installed during the first fix (when cables are run) and the cabinet section fitted to the loudspeaker during the second fix. This modular approach simplifies installation and protects expensive audio equipment during construction. Appropriate wall fixings suitable for the wall's composition and the loudspeaker's weight must be used.
  • Eye Bolts: All DDX systems have threaded inserts for flown applications. Full-range cabinets have M8 inserts, and subwoofers have M10 inserts. Forged steel shouldered eye bolts, certified with a safe working load compatible with the cabinet's weight, must be used. A minimum of four eye bolts is recommended for suspension, with two for primary support (left and right), one at the rear for tilt adjustment, and a fourth for a secondary safety line attached to an independent mounting point.
  • Driver Rotation: For landscape orientation, the coaxial driver must be rotated through 90° to maintain the correct asymmetric dispersion pattern. The narrowest part of the HF waveguide should always be towards the bottom of the enclosure for optimal coverage.
  • Badge Rotation: The Martin Audio badge on the grille is spring-loaded and can be easily rotated to match the cabinet's orientation.
  • DSP and Amplification: DDX loudspeakers can be used with Martin Audio's DX0.5 loudspeaker management system, a professional two-input, six-output system offering crossover functions, parametric/shelving filters, level control, muting, delay, and output limiters for driver protection. Presets for each DDX model can be stored in the DX0.5. Alternatively, DDX loudspeakers can be used with DX4.0 or iKON amplifiers, which allow recalling presets via VU-NET software on a PC. For alternative processors, a loudspeaker parameter spreadsheet with detailed settings for crossover, limiters, and equalization points is available online.

Maintenance Features:

  • Grille Removal: The grilles are spring-loaded and do not require screws for removal. They can be easily eased out of the side slots using a flat-bladed screwdriver. This allows access for driver rotation and other maintenance.
  • Driver Access: Once the grille is removed, the driver is secured by hexagonal head screws, which can be removed to lift out and rotate the driver assembly.
  • Bracket Adjustments: Wall brackets allow for horizontal (pan) and vertical (tilt) adjustments. Horizontal adjustment is achieved by rotating the assembly on the vertical bolt, which can then be tightened. Vertical tilt adjustment is made by adjusting a grub screw. The two horizontal bolts can be tightened once the vertical position is fixed.

Safety First:

Professional loudspeakers can produce high sound levels. Prolonged exposure to levels above 90dB can cause cumulative hearing loss. Users should never stand close to loudspeakers driven at high levels. Suspending the system should only be done by qualified personnel following safe rigging practices, with secure fixings to the building structure. Consultation with architects, structural engineers, or other specialists is advised if there is any doubt. Only forged shoulder eye bolts with a thread length of at least 30mm should be used for suspension. Formed eye bolts (bent steel rods) are not recommended. Eye bolts are strongest along the thread axis; if angling the enclosure, ensure the eye bolts are rated for angle pull. The eye bolt's safe working load must exceed the loudspeaker's weight.
