On selection of a proper electrode:
The bead will lay smoothly over the
work piece without ragged edges
(fig f).
The base metal puddle will be as deep as
the bead that rises above it.
The welding operation will make a
crackling sound.
On selection of a small electrode:
The bead will be high and irregular
(fig g).
The arc will be difficult to maintain.
On selection of a large electrode:
The arc will burn through light metals
.
The bead will undercut the work piece.
The bead will be flat and porous
(fig h)
.
The rod may stick to work piece
.
Note: Rate of travel over the work piece also
affects the weld. To ensure proper penetration
and enough rod deposit, the arc must be
moved slowly and evenly along the weld seam.
