Section 5 - Maintenance

The voltage reading should not fall below approximately 17 V for a 24 V system. Measure voltage drop at
the following points:
At the batteries
At the battery cut‑off switch
At the fuses
At the motor and solenoid connections
At the power cables arriving at the thruster's control box
If the voltage measures low, the following items need to be checked:
Check for bad batteries
Check for insufficiently charged batteries
Check for poorly tightened or corroded connections
Joystick and Switchpad
The joystick and switchpad are sealed units and only require surface cleaning. Wipe down the joystick and
switchpad with a clean cloth, dampened with water after each use to maintain appearance and gasket
integrity. To avoid harming the surface finishes and rubber material, do not use a harsh or corrosive solvent
to clean the joystick or switchpad.
If cracks or tears in the boot or covering appear, contact your authorized Mercury MerCruiser or Cummins
MerCruiser distributor repair facility immediately.
Battery Maintenance
AGM Style Batteries
Refer to the vessel owners or operators manual for location and access information for the thruster
batteries. Keep all connections clean and secure. The AGM style batteries used for the Total Command
system are sealed batteries and do not require filling. Do not open the batteries.
Ensure that the covers and battery compartment vent hoses are in place after any battery maintenance
has occured to maintain proper ventilation of the batteries during use.
Charging System Maintenance
Total Command Charging System Components
The Total Command charging system consists of the alternators on the engines and may include a 12 V
DC to 24 V DC (DC to DC) converter. Keep all connections clean and tight. Refer to your engine owners
and operators manual for appropriate engine maintenance, and to your vessel owners and operators
manual for specifics on the location, proper operation, and maintenance of your DC to DC converter.
Thruster Motor Maintenance
Refer to the Vessel Owners and Operators Manual for information about the location of and access to the
thruster motors and relays for Total Command.

WARNING
Performing service or maintenance without first disconnecting the battery can cause product damage,
personal injury, or death due to fire, explosion, electrical shock, or unexpected engine starting. Always
disconnect the battery cables from the battery before maintaining, servicing, installing, or removing
engine or drive components.
