Excessive Engine Temperature
Possible Cause Remedy
Seacock closed or partially closed, if equipped Fully open seacock.
Clogged or improperly installed seawater strainer Clean or correct installation of seawater strainer
Drive belt loose or in poor condition Replace and/or adjust belt.
Seawater pickups obstructed Remove obstruction.
Faulty thermostat Replace.
Coolant level low in closed cooling section Check for cause of low coolant level and repair. Fill
system with proper coolant solution.
Heat exchanger cores plugged with foreign material Clean seawater side of water/water heat exchanger,
and seawater strainer.
Loss of pressure in closed cooling section Check for leaks. Clean, inspect and test pressure
cap.
Closed cooling section dirty Clean and flush.
Faulty seawater pickup pump Repair.
Seawater discharge restricted or plugged Clean exhaust elbow.
Seawater inlet hose kinked (restricted) Position hose to prevent kinking (restriction).

housing
Have inspected by an Authorized Mercury
