The following example illustrates when the Ping com-
mand cannot reach its intended address, usually indicat-
ing an incorrect IPv4 address or a bad network
connection.
The following example illustrates when the Ping com-
mand is not returned in the allowed time. Ping timeouts
generally indicate a problem with the network, such that
the network hardware is incorrectly configured, not pow-
ered on, or not connected.
Mac OS X
To use the Ping command in Mac OS X:
1. Locate and double-click Network Utility.app in the Appli-
cations>Utilities folder to launch it.
2. Click the Ping tab at the top of the window.
3. Enter an IPv4 address or URL (DNS name) in the network
address field.
4. Set the number of pings as desired.
5. Click the Ping button. Ping messages will be sent.
6. If you selected “Send an unlimited number of Pings,”
click the Stop button to stop sending pings.
The following example illustrates when the Ping com-
mand is returned successfully. The time for the Ping is
indicated in milliseconds. Long return times can be
caused by network congestion.
