Overview

The Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard is an accessory designed for the Surface Pro X, offering enhanced functionality and protection. Its primary function is to provide a physical keyboard and a large glass trackpad for typing and navigation, transforming the Surface Pro X into a more traditional laptop-like experience. A key feature of this keyboard is its integrated storage tray, which not only securely holds the Surface Slim Pen but also charges it, ensuring the pen is always ready for use. The keyboard itself is crafted with Alcantara material, providing a distinct tactile feel.

Function Description:

The Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard serves as an input device for the Surface Pro X, enabling users to type, navigate with the trackpad, and interact with the device using the Surface Slim Pen. The integrated storage tray for the Slim Pen is a central functional aspect, allowing for convenient storage and wireless charging of the pen. This design ensures that the pen is always accessible and powered, facilitating quick transitions between typing and inking tasks. The keyboard connects to the Surface Pro X, providing a stable and responsive input experience.

Usage Features:

Setting up the Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard is straightforward. Users attach the top of the keyboard to the bottom of their Surface Pro X. The Surface Slim Pen can then be placed in the storage tray for charging and to wake it up. An amber LED light on the Slim Pen indicates that it is charging. Once charged, removing the pen from the tray prepares it for writing on the Surface.

Connecting the Slim Pen to the Surface Pro X can be done automatically in two ways:

  • Automatic Connection via Keyboard Tray: Placing the pen in the keyboard's storage tray and then removing it will automatically connect it.
  • Swift Connect: Simply writing on the screen with the pen will trigger a setup experience to customize the pen.

Alternatively, the Slim Pen can be paired via Bluetooth:

  1. Navigate to Start > Settings > Devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
  2. Press and hold the top button of the pen for 5-7 seconds until the LED light flashes white, indicating Bluetooth pairing mode.
  3. Select "Surface Slim Pen" from the list of available devices to pair.

The top button of the Slim Pen has a default function to launch Microsoft Whiteboard. This shortcut can be customized, along with other pen settings, by going to Start > Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink.

Maintenance Features:

Maintaining the Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard and its associated components involves general cleaning recommendations to ensure longevity and optimal performance.

General Cleaning:

  • Surface Touchscreen: The touchscreen is coated for easy cleaning. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth or a screen cleaning wipe. If necessary, dampen the cloth with water, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution 70% or less, or eyeglass cleaner. Avoid using glass cleaner or other harsh chemical cleaners.
  • Sunlight and Heat: Keep the Surface out of direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as ultraviolet light and excessive heat can damage the display.
  • Protection: Close the cover when transporting or not using the Surface to protect the screen.

Cover and Keyboard Care:

  • Cleaning: The Touch Cover or Type Cover can be cleaned with a lint-free cloth dampened with mild soap and water. Do not apply liquids directly to the Surface or the cover. Regular cleaning helps maintain its appearance.
  • Spine and Magnetic Connections: For dirt or stains on the spine or magnetic connections, apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to a soft, lint-free cloth for cleaning.

Alcantara Material Care:

  • Regular Care: To keep the Alcantara material looking good, wipe it with a lint-free white cloth dampened with a mild soap and water solution or a screen cleaning wipe as needed.
  • Stain Removal: If spills occur on Alcantara, try to clean them within 30 minutes to prevent stains from setting. Gently clean with swirling motions using a white lint-free cloth dampened with soap and water (a solution of two parts water to one part mild soap works well). Wipe dry with a clean, light-colored cloth.

Disinfectant Products:

  • Specific recommendations for disinfectant products vary by Surface device and finish. Refer to the provided table for guidance on which products are safe to use.
  • Caution: Do not use disinfectant wipes on any Surface touchscreen.

Battery Health:

  • To maximize battery life, allow the battery to drain below 50% several times a week before charging.
  • Avoid keeping the Surface plugged in 24/7.
  • Store the Surface in a cool, dry room when not in use.

Power Cord Care:

  • Avoid Twisting/Pinching: Power cords can weaken if repeatedly twisted or bent. Avoid tight wraps, especially around the power brick; instead, use loose coils.
  • Regular Inspection: Inspect the power cord regularly, particularly where it connects to the power brick.
  • Gentle Unplugging: When unplugging the Surface, gently remove the connector from the charging port to prevent damage to the cord.

Troubleshooting Surface Pen:

  • Compatibility Check: Ensure the Surface Pen is compatible with the Surface device.
  • Testing: Test the pen in apps like OneNote, Sticky Notes, or Fresh Paint. If it works there, the issue might be app-specific.
  • Touchscreen Functionality: If the pen isn't working, check if the touchscreen responds to touch.
  • Battery Level: Check the pen's battery level in Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. Replace or charge the battery if low.
  • Pen Settings: Verify cursor, handwriting, and top button settings in Start > Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink. Adjust pen pressure settings in the Surface app.
  • LED Light Check: The LED light on the pen indicates its status (pairing, low battery).
  • Updates: Ensure the Surface and Windows are updated, and drivers/firmware are installed.
  • Diagnostic Toolkit: Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for troubleshooting.
  • Pen Not Inking: If the pen doesn't ink, check LED light functionality (power issue if off), run Windows Updates or Diagnostic Toolkit, restart Surface, and replace the battery.
  • Pen Not Pairing: Press and hold the top button until the LED blinks white for Bluetooth pairing. Go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, ensure Bluetooth is on, and select "Add Bluetooth or other device" to pair. If the pen is already paired to another Surface, remove it from that device's Bluetooth list.
  • Top Button Shortcut Not Working: Check if the pen is paired and if the battery is low. Confirm shortcut assignments in Start > Settings > Devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
  • Buttons Not Working/Jagged Writing: Re-pair the pen with the Surface.
  • Broken/Lost/Worn Pen Tip: Refer to instructions for replacing Surface Pen tips.
  • Requesting Replacement: If the pen needs replacement, go to Device service and repair, sign in with a Microsoft account, and select the registered Surface device to see replacement offers based on warranty status.
