Check the LED light on your pen. If you aren't sure what the LED light on your pen means, go to
the section My pen won't pair with my Surface or The light on my pen is blinking red or doesn't
turn on.
Update your Surface. See Install Surface and Windows updates and Download drivers and
firmware for Surface.
Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.
My pen won't ink
If your pen doesn't ink, here's what you can do:
1. Test the LED light functionality. If the LED light doesn't turn on, this is a power issue.
2. Run Windows Updates or the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.
3. Restart your Surface, even if it already restarted during Windows Updates.
4. Replace the battery. To learn how, go to Change Surface Pen batteries.
Note: Surface Pen isn't compatible with Surface Laptop Go.
My pen won't pair with my Surface
1. On your pen, press and hold the top button until the LED light blinks to turn on
Bluetooth pairing mode.
2. On your PC, select Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices .
3. Make sure Bluetooth is on, then select Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
Choose Surface Pen in the list of devices. Follow any other instructions if they appear,
then select Done.
If you don't see your pen in the list of devices, the LED light can help you find the issue. Press
and hold the top button of your pen for 5-7 seconds.

What does it mean?
The LED light
blinks
continuously.
Your pen is receiving power and trying to pair with a device. Restart your
Surface and try pairing it again.
