Recommended
Steam Sterilization
Monitoring Program
All functions of the sterilizer should be
monitored to provide maximum sterility
assurance. We recommend using our printer
to provide a permanent record of actual
exposure times and temperatures.
For additional assurance that minimum
sterilizing conditions have been achieved,
we recommend the use of a quality chemical
indicator with each cycle and within each
package.
Since chemical indicators do not prove
sterilization, biological monitoring is
considered the reliable method for verifying
the sterilization process. According to the
CDC (Centers for Disease Control) whose
guidelines are now enforced by OSHA,
“All sterilizers should be (biologically)
monitored at least once a week using
commercial preparations of spores intended
specifically for that type of sterilizer
(i.e., Bacillus stearothermophilus for steam
sterilizers and Bacillus subtillis for ethylene
oxide and dry heat sterilizers).”
