Chapter 7
POWER UP SELF-TEST
1.0 Error Codes
At power-up, the radio performs a self-test routine that checks the radio functionality. If the checks
are successful, the radio generates a high-pitched self-test pass tone. If the self-test is not
successful, one low-pitched (300Hz) error tone is heard to indicate there is a failure (see Table 7-1
below).
The problems detected during the power up tests are also presented as error codes on the radio
display. The meaning of the displayed error codes are listed in Table 7-1. The self-test errors are
classified as either fatal or non-fatal. Fatal errors will inhibit user operation, non-fatal errors will not.

FAIL 01/98 FATAL Internal RAM error Defective microcontroller
300Hz Tone
(Radio without
display)
- Possible Radio hardware failure or
invalid codeplug.
Turn the Radio OFF then ON
again.
If the tone still sounds then
re-program the code plug and
retest the radio.
If the tone still sounds then
the main board may be faulty.
NOTE Due to the nature of fatal ROM & RAM error, it may not be possible to present an error
code on the display. In these cases the radio will attempt to display the appropriate
error code, generate an illegal mode tone for one second and then reset its
microcontroller.
