Overview

This document is a user manual for the DUERR Log Splitter, specifically models 424/LCD/22 (part number 249-623-003) and Model 623. It provides comprehensive information on assembly, safe operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and warranty details.

Function Description:

The DUERR Log Splitter is a power equipment designed for splitting wood. It utilizes a hydraulic system with a two-stage pump and a directional valve to extend and retract a splitting wedge, applying force to split logs lengthwise. The device can be operated in both vertical and horizontal positions, making it versatile for different log sizes and user preferences. The two-stage pump is designed to provide rapid cylinder movement under low load conditions (using both large and small gear sections) and then switch to the smaller gear section for higher pressure when encountering resistance during the actual splitting operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Numbers: 424/LCD/22, Model 623
  • Part Number: 249-623-003
  • Operating Pressure: 3000 to 3200 PSI
  • Maximum Log Length: 24 inches
  • Hydraulic Fluid Type: Dexron II Automatic Transmission Fluid
  • Hydraulic System Capacity: Approximately 7.6 gallons
  • Hydraulic Filter: 10 micron (part number 723-0405)
  • Pump Coupler: Flexible nylon "spider" insert (part number 717-0891)
  • Engine: Internal combustion engine (specific model not detailed, but requires separate manual for service and oil information). Shipped without gasoline or oil.
  • Tire Pressure: Maximum 30 p.s.i. (or manufacturer's recommended pressure on sidewall)
  • Warranty: 18 months limited warranty for non-commercial use, 90 days for commercial use. Pump and cylinder are covered for 1 year, and the valve for 3 years, from the purchase date, regardless of usage type.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The manual provides detailed instructions for assembling the log splitter, including attaching the tongue, hitch, wedge/beam/cylinder assembly, beam support/latch bracket, engine/pump assembly, fenders, and control handle. All hardware is pre-positioned on the parts for convenience.
  • Initial Preparation: Before first use, the engine must be serviced with gasoline and oil (refer to separate engine manual). The beam area where the splitting wedge slides must be lubricated with engine oil (not grease). The reservoir tank must be filled to the top with Dexron II automatic transmission fluid, and the pump primed by pulling the recoil starter approximately 10 times with the spark plug disconnected.
  • Operation Positions: The log splitter can be used in vertical position for heavy logs or horizontal position for general use. The beam hinge bracket needs to be adjusted for vertical operation.
  • Control Handle: The control handle has three positions: FORWARD (moves wedge toward end plate), NEUTRAL (wedge stops), and REVERSE (wedge returns). The FORWARD position requires the handle to be held, returning to neutral upon release. The REVERSE position locks in place and automatically returns to neutral when the stroke is complete.
  • Safety: Emphasizes operating on level ground, standing behind the reservoir tank, keeping hands and feet clear of moving parts, not splitting logs sideways, and never operating while intoxicated or fatigued. Blocking wheels during operation is required.
  • Log Dislodger: Adjustable for shorter logs (less than 24") to reduce cycle time.
  • Towing: Requires checking federal, local, and state vehicle requirements (e.g., taillights) and ensuring secure attachment to the tow vehicle with safety chains.

Maintenance Features:

  • Fluid Level Check: Hydraulic fluid level should be checked regularly and maintained 1.5" to 2" from the top of the tank. Low fluid levels will damage the pump and void the warranty.
  • Fluid Change: Hydraulic fluid should be changed every 100 hours of operation. The reservoir tank and hoses should be flushed with kerosene during repairs involving the tank, pump, or valve.
  • Hydraulic Filter Change: The 10 micron hydraulic filter should be changed every 50 hours.
  • Beam Lubrication: Both sides of the beam where the splitting wedge slides must be lubricated with engine oil (not grease) before each use.
  • Splitting Wedge Adjustment: Periodically adjust bolts on the slide plate to eliminate excess space between the wedge plate and the beam, ensuring free movement without being too loose or too tight.
  • Pump Coupler Inspection/Replacement: The flexible nylon "spider" insert between the pump and engine shaft must be inspected regularly for deterioration. Replacement is necessary if deteriorated to prevent damage to pump and engine bearings. Proper clearance (0.010" to 0.060") between coupling halves is critical.
  • Engine Maintenance: Refer to the separate engine manual for specific instructions on oil changes, air cleaner service (every 25 hours, or more frequently in dusty conditions), spark plug cleaning/replacement (once a season), and carburetor adjustment.
  • General Checks: Periodically check all nuts, bolts, screws, hose clamps, and hydraulic fittings for tightness. Ensure safety guards and shields are in place.
  • Overheating: If hydraulic fluid becomes excessively hot, stop the unit and allow it to cool.
  • Off-Season Storage: Drain the fuel tank and run the engine until fuel lines and carburetor are empty. Drain crankcase oil and refill with fresh oil. Protect the inside of the engine by pouring 0.5 oz of engine oil into the cylinder. Clean the unit thoroughly and wipe with an oiled rag to prevent rust. The tongue can be removed for compact storage.
