The NAD T 765 now comes with full High Definition decoding thanks to NAD’s innovative approach to upgrading your AV tuner preamplifier
Modular Design Construction (MDC). The NAD T 765 is heir to many generations of award-winning NAD designs. This exceptional pedigree is
evident in both the look and the feel of the T 765, and it is unmistakable the moment you listen. It is NAD’s insistence on creating products with
remarkable sound quality at sensible prices that has made NAD the first choice among the most knowledgeable listeners from around the world.
NAD’s ‘Music First’ philosophy dictates that we endow our Audio Video products with the same warm, involving sound quality that makes music
listening so rewarding with our stereo components. This stands in stark contrast to our competitors who view Audio Video components primarily
from a ‘content’ point-of-view, with sound quality far down the list of priorities. Yet the T 765 is second to none in terms of flexibility and up-to-
the-minute digital technology.

Overview

The NAD T 765 AV Surround Sound Receiver is a sophisticated audio-video component designed to deliver remarkable sound quality and advanced digital technology within a flexible and user-friendly package. Building on NAD's "Music First" philosophy, this receiver prioritizes an involving sound quality that makes music listening as rewarding as with dedicated stereo components, while also offering cutting-edge features for home theater enthusiasts.

Function Description

The T 765 serves as the central hub for a home entertainment system, integrating audio and video processing, amplification, and tuning capabilities. It features full High Definition decoding, thanks to NAD's innovative Modular Design Construction (MDC), which allows for future upgrades to keep pace with evolving digital formats. This design prevents premature obsolescence by enabling hardware and software enhancements to be added as new technologies become available, meaning users only need to replace specific modules rather than the entire receiver.

At its core, the T 765 is a powerful amplifier, delivering 140W x 7 (FTC) power, or 7 x 80W minimum continuous power into 4/8 ohms with all channels driven simultaneously. It incorporates PowerDrive™ amplifier technology, which automatically adjusts the power supply settings to match the loudspeaker's needs, ensuring dynamic and distortion-free performance even with demanding 4-ohm designs. NAD Soft Clipping™ is also included to prevent harsh clipping distortion.

For audio processing, the receiver utilizes the AM 100 Dual DSP Audio module with the latest Dual Core Floating Point DSP technology. This enables lossless decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, alongside a comprehensive suite of surround modes including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, ProLogic II, ProLogic IIx, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24, DTS NEO:6, EARS, and Enhanced Stereo Surround Modes. The proprietary EARS (Enhanced Ambient Recovery System) circuit is optimized for 7-channel surround, extracting natural ambience from recordings to create a warm, natural reverberant effect from any 2-channel source, avoiding artificial reverb. High-resolution and extremely linear D/A Converters are carefully selected for optimal performance.

Video functionality is handled by the VM 100 video module, featuring advanced HDMI Receiver and Transmitter chips for compatibility with a broad range of HD digital video sources and displays. A powerful FPGA with custom software processes the video signal, allowing for cross-conversion of analogue video to digital video and maintaining the source's native resolution. Interlaced video is converted to progressive scan over HDMI for full compatibility with modern HD TVs. The receiver supports analogue video to HDMI conversion, enabling a single cable connection to the TV for all sources.

The T 765 also includes an AM/FM tuner with RDS (Radio Data System) support, allowing it to display station information and music being played. It features 40 direct access presets that can be a mix of AM, FM, and optional XM or DAB stations. A 'Digital Broadcast Ready' socket on the rear panel allows for the addition of outboard DAB or XM modules.

Usage Features

The T 765 is designed for luxurious simplicity, making it easy to operate despite its advanced capabilities. Initial system setup is best accomplished using a television monitor and the clear On Screen Display (OSD), which can also provide status updates during everyday use. Once configured, all settings are stored in non-volatile memory. The front panel display provides comprehensive information about the selected source, surround mode, and volume, and can be customized by renaming inputs and choosing what information to display.

Automatic Audio Setup is a key feature, utilizing a supplied calibrated microphone. By placing the microphone in the listening position and activating Audyssey Setup, the system automatically detects connected speakers, determines the ideal subwoofer crossover point, checks speaker phasing, and adjusts levels and delays with a high degree of accuracy.

The receiver offers 5 A/V Custom Presets, allowing users to store unique speaker level and tone control settings for instant recall, making it easy to tailor the system for different program materials. Encoded surround modes like Dolby Digital and DTS are automatically selected when detected. Direct access speaker level adjustment is available for surround, center, and subwoofer channels.

Connectivity is extensive, with 7 analogue stereo audio inputs (including 1 front input), a Media Player MP front panel input, 6 analogue video inputs (including 1 S-Video and 1 composite front input), 3 component video inputs, and 7 digital audio inputs (3 coaxial, 4 optical, including 1 front optical input). For video, there are 4 HDMI digital video inputs and 1 output, freely assignable. Outputs include 3 analogue audio outputs (Zone 2, with Zone 3 and 4 assignable), 4 video monitor outputs (HDMI, Component, S-Video, Composite), 3 analogue video outputs, 7.2 analogue pre-outs (with 2 subwoofers), and 2 digital outputs. The back surround amplifier channels can be reassigned as Zone 2, 3, 4, or Main Front (Bi-Amp).

For multi-zone audio, the T 765 offers Zone 2 A/V line level output with independent source and volume selection, and Zone 3 and Zone 4 audio output with independent source and volume selection. It also includes speaker A + B switching (Speakers B stereo only).

Control is facilitated by the included HTR 3 Illuminated Learning Remote Control, which can control up to eight different components. Its device key illuminates to indicate the controlled device, and illuminated buttons aid operation in low light. The remote can "learn" commands for products not already included in its memory, and its Macro function allows up to 64 individual commands to be triggered by pressing just two keys, simplifying complex operations like watching a DVD.

For advanced control systems, the T 765 features an RS-232 port interface, 3 x 12V output triggers, and 1 x 12V input. It also has IR input and 3 x IR outputs.

Maintenance Features

The Modular Design Construction (MDC) is a key maintenance feature, allowing for future upgrades of hardware and software modules. This means that as new audio and video formats emerge, users can update specific components of the receiver rather than replacing the entire unit, extending its lifespan and maintaining its relevance. This approach reduces waste and provides a cost-effective path to keeping the system current with the latest technologies.

The robust construction and NAD's commitment to quality ensure long-term reliability. The T 765's design emphasizes durability and consistent performance, minimizing the need for frequent servicing. The inclusion of Soft Clipping™ helps protect speakers from damage due to excessive distortion, indirectly contributing to system longevity.

The user-friendly setup process, including Automatic Audio Setup with a calibrated microphone, simplifies initial configuration and ensures optimal performance, reducing the likelihood of user-induced issues that might require troubleshooting. The ability to store custom presets also helps maintain preferred settings, ensuring consistent audio and video quality without constant readjustment.
