TRANSIENTPROTECTION
Intheprocessofpowerdistribution,transientelectricalenergy(including,but
notlimitedto,lightningstrikes,intermittentshortcircuits,andswitching
transients)canbeintroducedontopowerlines.Suchtransientenergycanbe
verydamagingtoelectronichardwareandcanalsocausedatacorruption.
Underthesecircumstances,NCRrecommendsthe
useofACpowertransient
suppressorsanddata(communication)linetransientsuppressors.Such
protectivedevicesareintendedtoguardagainstpoweranddatalinetransients
thatcanresultinhardwaredamageandvarioussystemorprogramerrors.
Improvementofanydeficienciesinpowerqualityisacustomerresponsibility.
Malfunctionand/orcomponent
failureasaresultofpowerqualityproblems
are/isnotcoveredbyNCRCorporationMaintenanceAgreement.NCRaccepts
noliabilityforanysuchoccurrence norforitsconsequences.
Whenpowertransientsuppressionisrequired,thesuppressorsusedshould
meetthefollowingminimumrequirements:
Dissipateenergytomatchtheappropriateapplicationcategoriesas
definedbyANSI/IEEEStandardC62.41,GuideonSurgeVoltagesinLow
VoltageACPowerCircuits.
Beofthevoltagelimiting(clipping),ortrackingfiltertype.The
suppressormustnot‘clamp’thevoltagetozero,andmustselfrecover
afterthepassageofthetransient.Thesuppressormaybeofthehybrid
typeconstructionthatmakesuseofvarioustechnologiesinorderto
meetspeedanddissipation
requirements.
Exhibita‘shortcircuit’modeuponitsfailure,thusprovidingapositive
indicationofitsfailuresuchasablownfuseortrippedbreaker
