Preset Manual White Balance
Follow the steps below to measure a value for preset manual white balance. Note that white balance
can not be measured during live view (end live view before proceeding) or when Record movies is
selected for Custom Setting g4 (Assign shutter button).
Select manual focus.
Place a neutral gray or white ob-
ject under the lighting that will be
used in the fi nal photograph and
rotate the focus-mode selector to
MF (manual focus).

Set white balance to L (Preset manual).
Keeping the U button pressed,
rotate the main command dial un-
til L is displayed in the control
panel (D800/D800E) or rear control
panel (D4).

Select a preset.
Keeping the U button pressed,
rotate the sub-command dial until
the desired white balance preset
(d-1 to d-4) is displayed.

Select direct measurement mode.
Release the U button briefl y and
then press the button again. Keep
the button pressed until the L
icon starts to fl ash.

Measure white balance.
The L icon will fl ash for about six seconds. Before the icon stops fl ashing, frame the reference
object so that it fi lls the viewfi nder and press the shutter-release button all the way down. The
camera will measure a value for white balance and store it in the preset selected in Step 3. No
photograph will be recorded; white balance can be measured accurately even when the camera
is not in focus.
