Overview

This document is an owner's guide for the Noritz NR98-DVC-CA Tankless Gas Water Heater, designed for indoor wall-mounted, power-vented, and sealed models. It provides comprehensive information on safety, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The Noritz NR98-DVC-CA is a tankless gas water heater that provides on-demand hot water. Unlike traditional tank water heaters, it heats water only when needed, offering energy efficiency and a continuous supply of hot water. It uses direct ignition to light the burner automatically, eliminating the need for a pilot light. The unit is designed for both potable water heating and space heating applications, including in manufactured homes.

  • Installation: Approved for installation up to 1350m (4500 ft.) above sea level. For higher elevations, contact Noritz America.
  • Water Quality: Damage from poor water quality (exceeding EPA National Secondary Drinking Water Regulations for Total Hardness, Aluminum, Chloride, Copper, Iron, Manganese, pH, Total Dissolved Solids, Zinc, Sulfate ion, Residual chlorine) is not covered by warranty.

Usage Features:

  • Operation Panel (RC-7650M): Features a Power On/Off button, UP/DOWN setting buttons for temperature and flow meter alarm, a Burner On indicator, Priority indicator, Temperature Setting display, Flow Meter Setting display, and Error Code display.
  • Muting the Operation Panel: The panel emits a sound when any button is pushed, which can be muted by holding the Power On/Off button for five seconds. The flow meter alarm and high temperature warning tone (for settings 55°C/131°F or higher) cannot be muted.
  • Setting Water Temperature: Users can adjust the hot water temperature using the UP/DOWN buttons. A high temperature warning (flashing display and tone) occurs when setting to 55°C (131°F) or higher.
  • Flow Meter Alarm: This feature allows users to set a desired volume of water (e.g., for filling a bathtub). An alarm sounds for ten seconds when the set level is reached. The water continues to run until manually turned off. Settings range from 40-240L (10-60 gallon) in 20L intervals, and specific volumes like 260L (70 gallon), 300L (80 gallon), 340L (90 gallon), 380L (100 gallon), and 990L (262 gallon). The alarm does not sound if set for 990L.
  • Adjusting Maximum Output Temperature: The upper limit of the hot water supply temperature can be changed via a specific procedure involving the flow meter alarm set button and temperature setting buttons.
  • Freeze Prevention: The unit includes a freeze-prevention heater that automatically prevents freezing within the device down to -35°C (-30°F), provided the power plug is connected. External plumbing requires additional insulation or heating.
  • Long-Term Storage: For extended periods of disuse, the manual outlines a procedure to drain the water heater to prevent damage from freezing or stagnant water. This involves closing gas and water valves, turning on/off power, opening hot water fixtures, and draining the unit.
  • Gas Conversion: If moving to a region with a different gas type (Natural Gas to Propane or vice versa), a qualified service agency must install a gas conversion kit. This involves replacing specific parts and adjusting settings using a remote controller and digital gas manometer.

Maintenance Features:

  • Periodic Inspection: Users should regularly check for combustible materials near the unit, abnormal sounds during operation, external abnormalities (discoloration, flaws), proper operation of the pressure relief valve, water leaks, and dust/soot in the flue terminal.
  • Water Drain Valve (with Water Filter) Cleaning: If the water drain valve filter is clogged, it can affect hot water flow. The guide provides steps to close valves, drain water, remove and clean the filter with a brush under running water, and reassemble.
  • Equipment Cleaning: The outside surface can be wiped with a wet cloth and neutral detergent, then dried.
  • Operation Panel Cleaning: The panel surface should be wiped with a wet cloth. Benzene, oil, or fatty detergents should not be used. The panel is water-resistant but not waterproof, so it should be kept as dry as possible.
  • Scale Prevention: If supply water is hard, scale can build up and reduce hot water output. Flushing the unit periodically is recommended, and a water softener or scale inhibitor can prevent scale formation.
  • Repair Parts: Noritz stocks repair and maintenance parts for this unit for twelve (12) years from the date of original installation.

Safety Information:

The manual uses various icons (DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, CAUTION without symbol) to indicate risk levels. Key safety warnings include:

  • Flammable Vapors: Do not use or store flammable products near the water heater due to explosion and fire risk.
  • Scalding: Hot water temperatures over 52°C (125°F) can cause severe burns. Children, disabled, and elderly are at highest risk. Users should feel water temperature before bathing/showering and consider temperature limiting valves. Do not change water temperature while hot water is running.
  • Gas Leaks: If a gas leak is noticed, stop use immediately, close the gas valve, open windows/doors, and call the gas supplier or fire department. Do not try to light any appliance or touch electrical switches.
  • Abnormal Combustion/Odors/Earthquake/Fire: Turn off hot water supply, power, and gas/water supply valves, then call a Noritz agent.
  • Pressure Relief Valve: If dripping or leaking, have a qualified technician replace it. Do not plug or remove the valve.
  • Flue Terminal: Do not place the flue terminal indoors or enclose it. Do not use combustible chemicals near it. Do not block with trash or debris. Do not touch during or immediately after operation.
  • Electrical Safety: Electrically ground the unit. Do not touch the power cord with wet hands. Do not use a broken, modified, or damaged power cord. Keep the power cord free of dust.
  • Children: Do not allow small children to play unsupervised in the bathroom or bathe unsupervised.
  • Installation/Service: Installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency, or gas supplier.
  • Water Quality: Damage from poor water quality is not covered by the warranty.
  • Freezing: Freezing can damage the unit. Ensure power is connected for internal freeze prevention. Take measures for external plumbing in extremely cold temperatures. Do not use the heater if it or piping is frozen.
  • Maintenance: Turn off power and allow the unit to cool before performing maintenance to prevent burns.
