Overview

The LabGard® ES Energy Saver Class II Laminar Flow Biosafety Cabinet is designed to provide product and personnel protection from particulate contaminants. It is available in four sizes: 3 ft. (.9m), 4 ft. (1.2m), 5 ft. (1.5m), and 6 ft. (1.8m). The cabinet utilizes an Energy Saver DC ECM motor, which is controlled by the FlowGard™ control system. This system provides automatic compensation for both filter loading and line voltage variances, ensuring consistent airflow. An Intelliflow digital dual thermistor airflow sensor monitors airflow velocity performance.

Function Description

The LabGard® ES NU-543E maintains a minimum inflow velocity of 100 LFPM (.51mps) through the work access opening and HEPA filters a downflow of air to the outside atmosphere from a common exhaust plenum. It discharges a percentage of air to the outside atmosphere after HEPA filtration and handles all biologically contaminated ducts and plenums under negative pressure or surrounded by negative pressure. The cabinet is suitable for pharmacy applications, where it is strongly recommended to exhaust to the outside. For microbiological applications with minute quantities of volatile toxic chemicals and trace amounts of radionuclides, exhausting to the outside is also recommended.

The FlowGard™ electronic control system features an OLED display with function keys, supporting multiple languages (English, Spanish, German, French, Chinese, Japanese). It controls the blower, fluorescent light, UV light (optional), and outlets via solid-state switches. An audible alarm switch with a ring-back function is included. The system monitors airflow velocity and displays the time of day and temperature. The sliding window position is monitored by micro switches.

Usage Features

  • Standby Mode: Displays NuAire logo and current time. Functions (except blower) can be turned on/off. Screen saver activates after 5 minutes of blower inactivity.
  • Run Mode: Initiated by pressing the blower key with the sliding window at operational height. Includes a 3-minute warm-up countdown. Airflow readings are displayed after warm-up.
  • Nite Care Mode: Configurable to run the DC ECM motor at a lower rate with the sliding window closed, maintaining HEPA filtration in the workzone. Blower LED blinks green, fluorescent light is disabled (UV light can be used).
  • Auto Timer Duration: Countdown timers for UV light, fluorescent light, and outlet power. Max duration is 8 hours, adjustable in 15-minute intervals.
  • Blower On/Off Password: Optional 3-key sequence for blower activation (default: B-H-B).
  • Ergonomics: Designed for proper user posture, effective work zone layout, and clear vision/sightlines. Includes non-metallic forearm support.
  • Cleaning Procedures: Blower should operate during cleaning. Window can be raised for access. Stainless steel surfaces should be re-wiped with sterile water or 70% IPA after using acids, chlorides, or halogens to prevent degradation.
  • Hazardous Drug Decontamination: Detailed procedures for spillage and periodic maintenance. Requires proper PPE (Tyvek gown, Nitrile gloves, full-faced HEPA filtered respirator). Involves cleaning all accessible surfaces, removing perforated metal diffuser screen, work tray, and front grill.
  • Auto Decon: Automated decontamination process (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide). Cabinet control system can aid decontaminate circulation. Requires sealing front and top openings.

Maintenance Features

  • Installation Instructions: Cabinet location should be away from disruptive air currents. A minimum 6" (152mm) clearance is required from the top of the cabinet to the ceiling for proper exhaust ventilation.
  • Base Stand Assembly: Base stand is shipped knocked down and assembled per drawing BCD-16633.
  • Leveling: Adjustable leg levelers provide ± 3/4" (20mm) adjustment.
  • Bench Installation: Bench must support 4 times the cabinet weight. Seal cabinet base to bench with RTV caulk.
  • Gas Service: Not recommended for use with natural gas. If necessary, an additional emergency gas manual shutoff valve and an integral gas solenoid valve must be installed. Bunsen burners with on-demand ignition are recommended.
  • Testing and Commissioning: NuAire recommends testing to factory standards after installation and prior to use. This includes reviewing product installation, verifying airflow sensor shroud, and performing LFBSC certification tests (HEPA filter leak, downflow/inflow velocity, airflow smoke patterns, site installation assessments). Recertification is recommended annually or after filter changes/maintenance.
  • Fluorescent/LED Lamp Replacement: Lamps are external to the cabinet. Remove screws from the control center to rotate it down, exposing the lamp for replacement.
  • HEPA Filter/Motor Replacement: Filters should be replaced when efflux velocity cannot be maintained or inflow velocity falls below 100 LFPM (.51 m/s). The cabinet must be decontaminated before filter replacement. Disconnect electrical power before maintenance. Supply and exhaust filters can be replaced independently.
  • Sliding Window Replacement and Manual Adjustment: Involves removing the front decorative panel, control center, and window glide assemblies. Adjustable by set screw and tension screw.
  • Airflow Control System Setup and Calibration: Performed by a qualified technician using a velometer. Involves adjusting PWM signal and exhaust filter choke to balance airflow. DC ECM motor PWM signal DC voltage should be monitored.
  • Sensor Value Adjust: Allows adjustment of airflow velocity offset to match measured values.
  • Alarm Verification: Allows verification of alarm setpoints by adjusting blower speed to activate low or high airflow alarms.
  • Nite Care Calibration: Nite Care blower speed can be adjusted.
  • Main Control Board Replacement: Disconnect power. Remove screws from the control center to rotate it down. Replace fuses with same type and rating.
  • FlowGard™ Control Board Reset: Master reset function available for qualified service personnel to reset all calibration, cabinet size, motor type/function, and option settings to default.
  • Digital Intelliflow Airflow Sensor Replacement: Disconnect electrical power. Turn locking ring counterclockwise and pull sensor away. Reattach by aligning key and turning clockwise. Airflow calibration is required after replacement.
  • Disposal and Recycle: Cabinets contain reusable materials. All components except HEPA filters can be disposed of or recycled after proper disinfection. Follow local, state, and federal guidelines for HEPA filter solid waste.
