Overview

The provided document is an instruction manual for the nVent SPECTRACOOL N36 Model Air Conditioner, P/N 89215758.

This air conditioner is designed for enclosure cooling and heating, offering two primary modes of operation: cooling and heating. The evaporator fan runs continuously in both modes. For cooling, the compressor and condenser impellers activate when the enclosure temperature rises above the cooling thermostat setpoint. If equipped with an optional head pressure control switch, condenser impellers start once refrigerant pressure reaches a specific setting. For heating, power is applied to heaters when the enclosure temperature falls below the heating thermostat setpoint, and powered off when it's 10 degrees above. Operating the unit outside specified ambient temperatures (131°F/55°C maximum, -40°F/-40°C minimum) voids the warranty. Setting the enclosure thermostat below 70°F can lead to frost buildup on the evaporator coil. Continuous moisture from the drain tube indicates ambient air ingress, which the unit must dehumidify.

Technical Specifications:

The N36 model air conditioner comes in various capacities and electrical configurations, identified by its model number. For example, N360616GXXX refers to a Global family unit, approximately 36 inches high, with a 6,000 BTU/Hr. capacity at 131/131°F. The third digit indicates voltage (1=115V, 2=230V, 4=460V), and the fourth digit indicates frequency (6=50/60Hz or 60Hz only).

Usage Features:

The air conditioner can be controlled via a standard internally mounted thermostat or an optional digital thermostat controller (RAC module).

  • Standard Thermostat: Uses a 10-1061-16 thermostat with a 10°F differential. Cooling turns on at setpoint + 10°F and off at setpoint. Heating turns on at setpoint and off at setpoint + 10°F.
  • Digital Thermostat Controller (Optional): A parametric controller pre-programmed at the factory. It manages cooling/heating setpoint, differential, and high/low temperature setpoints, all adjustable by the operator. Alarms are outputted through an alarm relay.
    • Display: Features a keypad, main field for temperature data (inlet and outlet), and icon status indicators for functions like cooling, heating, alarming, and fan operation.
    • Remote Communication (Optional RAC Module): Allows remote access and control via Ethernet (SNMP, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, Profinet) and USB (Modbus RTU, RS-845). The RAC module acts as a gateway to the digital thermostat.
      • Capabilities: Read/change air temperature, cooling/heating setpoints and differentials, high/low temperature alarm settings, Gateway/Device IP address, Subnet Mask, Trap IP address, community string, unit identification, and IP address state (static/dynamic).
      • Hoffman PC Interface Tool: Software for remote management and monitoring, including data logging, text message, and email alerting for alarms.
    • Primary-Secondary (PS) Mode: Allows up to 10 units to operate as a group network. A primary unit monitors all enclosure temperatures and manages ON/OFF status based on the highest temperature. Secondary units energize sequentially (10-second intervals) for cooling, and all units turn on heat together. If communication is lost, a unit enters standalone mode.
    • Lead-Lag (LL) Mode: Configurable for two units, alternating lead unit based on run time (0-250 hours) or automatically each cycle.
    • Alarm Management: Detects seven non-latching alarms (e.g., door open, sensor faults, malfunction, high/low temp warning, frost). Alarms are displayed on the controller and accessible remotely with the RAC module. Alarm history stores up to 25 events.
    • Compressor Restart Time Delay: A factory-set 3-minute (180 seconds) delay to reduce residual back pressure before restarting the compressor.
    • Alarm Output Contact: Normally open dry contact (250VAC @ 5 amps max) for external device connection, configurable as normally open (default) or normally closed.
    • Alarm Input Connection: Dry contact/switch input for door open alarm, connected via two 18 AWG white wires.

Maintenance Features:

  • Compressor: Hermetically sealed and lubricated, requires no maintenance. Access fitting covers should not be loosened or removed during the warranty period. Recharging ports are provided for refrigeration repair.
  • Inlet Air Filter: Designed for dust resistance. Can be removed for filterless operation. If used, regular cleaning is required to maintain normal operation and prevent reduced cooling airflow due to clogging.
    • Cleaning Instructions: Flush with warm water from the exhaust side to the intake side (avoid caustics). Allow to drain completely.
  • Condenser and Evaporator Air Movers: Impeller motors require no maintenance. If impellers fail, they can be replaced by removing the front cover.
  • Refrigerant Loss: Requires a certified technician for repair and recharging. Refer to the nameplate for refrigerant type and charge size. Ensure the system is properly evacuated before recharging.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Inspect the unit for damage.
  2. Install gaskets using the provided kit.
  3. Mount the unit, ensuring the gasket forms a watertight seal.
  4. Allow the unit to remain upright for at least five minutes before operation.
  5. Wire the unit to a properly grounded power supply, fused with a slow blow or HACR circuit breaker.
  6. For remote thermostats, wire outputs to the 24 VAC terminal strip.
  7. Set thermostat for desired cabinet temperature.
