Resetting the password
Windows
XP has a
function to
reset a forgotten
password.
To
use
this function, you
need
to create
a
password
reset
disk beforehand
following
the
steps below.
1
Connect
the
USB
floppy disk drive.
2 Select [start]
-
[Control
Panel]
-
[User Accounts]
and
select the account
you
used
to logon.
3
Select
[Prevent a forgotten
password]
from the [Related
Tasks]
menu and
create
a
password reset
disk
following
the on-screen
instructions.
Store
the password reset
disk in
a safe place.
Only the logon password for each account can
be
reset.
The
password
set in the
Setup Utility
cannot
be reset.
Recovery
Console
If
you
install the Recovery Console, you can use the
command
prompt
to execute
operations such as CHKDSK
in
cases where, for example,
Windows
XP will not
Start.
Use the following procedure to install Recovery Console. This procedure al-
lows you to select Recovery
Console
as a startup option
during
startup.

Select
[start]
-
[Run]
and
input [c:\windows\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons],
then
select [OK].
Follow the on-screen instructions,
j? Select
[start]
-
[Run]
and input [c:\util\msupdate\q308402\q308402_
wxp_spl_x86_enu.exe], then
select
[OK].
Follow
the
on-screen
instructions.

Enter
"Recovery
Console"
under [Search],
then
select
Depending
on the
Windows
settings,
installed applications,
and
drivers,
menus and

as use
of
the password reset
disk)
may be
inoperable.

system
administrator
for details.
