4 Quick Start and Reference Guide
Getting Started
The 56K PCI modem you’ve purchased is a full featured
controller-based faxmodem. One benefit of a controller-
based modem is that it has its own processor, which im-
poses little or no load on a computer’s CPU. In addition to
the controller, the modem has an onboard DSP (digital
signal processor) to handle all the computation-intensive
data transmission functions. Compared with soft modems
that ship inside many of today’s computers, controller
based faxmodems offer an outstanding performance
benefit.
Hardware and Software Requirements
In your modem package, you should have received the
following items in addition to this manual:
• 56K PCI Faxmodem.
• Phone cord.
• Fax and data communications software (on CD or
diskette).
To use your modem, you will need the following addi-
tional hardware:
• A computer running Windows® 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000,
or Linux, a minimum of 16 MB RAM (32 MB is rec-
ommended), and a hard drive with at least 5 MB
available.
• For software supplied on a CD-ROM disc, a CD drive.
• A telephone jack to plug the modem into, so the mo-
dem can dial out and receive calls.
• A soundcard if you want to use the modem as a tele-
phone answering device (voice mail option) plus an
earphone or speakers (for listening to incoming mes-
sages) and a microphone (if you want to record your
own outgoing message).
