Overview

The Pentair IntelliFlo® VSD 2 Variable Speed Pump is designed for use in various aquatic applications, including pools, spas, cleaners, and waterfalls. This pump offers advanced energy-saving features to ensure optimal filtration system efficiency. Unlike conventional pumps, the IntelliFlo® VSD 2 is a variable speed pump capable of operating at eight different speeds, which can be set at specific RPMs and for specific time intervals.

Function Description:

The IntelliFlo® VSD 2 pump's drive assembly comprises an operator control panel and system electronics that control the motor. A microprocessor within the drive adjusts the motor's rotational speed by altering both the frequency and voltage of the incoming current. This allows for precise control over pump operation. The pump can be set to run at speeds ranging from 450 RPM to 3450 RPM, with preset speeds of 750, 1500, 2350, and 3110 RPM available for various applications. The control panel can be mounted in four different orientations for user convenience or relocated using an optional keypad relocation kit (P/N R356905).

External Control:

The IntelliFlo® VSD 2 pump can communicate with an IntelliPool control system or an IntelliComm® communication center via a two-wire RS-485 communication cable (included with the control system). The IntelliComm® can remotely control the four preset variable speeds of the IntelliFlo® pump. The IntelliPool system can be configured to adjust pump speed based on pool temperature, size, and active functions.

Important Safety Instructions:

Improper sizing, installation, or use of the pump for unintended applications can lead to severe personal injury or death, including electric shock, fire, flooding, suction entrapment, or property damage due to structural failure. The pump can generate high levels of suction, posing a risk of entrapment if a person comes too close to suction openings. Installation must comply with national and local codes for swimming pools. In a domestic environment, the product may cause radio interference, requiring supplementary mitigation measures. The pump should not be installed on IT (isolated terra) mains networks (marine applications). A non-return valve after the pump is strongly recommended to prevent impeller unwinding. If required by local building codes, the pump must be supplied by an isolating transformer or through a residual current device (RCD) with a residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA (Type A or B GFCI).

General Warnings:

Never open the inside or motor enclosure, as a capacitor bank holds a 230 VAC charge even when power is disconnected. The IntelliFlo® VSD 2 pump is not submersible. Exercise caution when installing and programming to limit the pump's performance potential with old or questionable equipment, as it is capable of 35 m³/hr or 30 meters of head. Electrical connections must comply with local codes and ordinances. Always press the Stop button and disconnect the communication cable before performing maintenance. Sufficient equipotential bonding (min. 4.5mm²) is required for all metal components of the pool, including the pump, for electrical safety and to reduce corrosion risk.

Risk of Electrical Shock or Electrocution:

Installation must be performed by a licensed electrician or certified pool serviceman in accordance with all applicable codes. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker before servicing.

Water Temperature Warning:

Water temperatures exceeding 38°C (100°F) can be hazardous, causing hyperthermia with symptoms like drowsiness, lethargy, dizziness, fainting, and increased internal body temperature. Effects include unawareness of danger, failure to perceive heat, inability to exit the spa, fetal damage in pregnant women, and unconsciousness leading to drowning. Alcohol, drugs, or medication significantly increase the risk of fatal hyperthermia in hot tubs and spas. Children should not use this product unsupervised. For non-single-family dwellings, a clearly labeled emergency switch must be provided, accessible within 1.52 m (5 feet) of the unit.

System Pressure Warning:

The IntelliFlo® VSD 2 can generate system pressures up to 30 meters. Installers must ensure all system components are rated to withstand at least 30 meters to prevent catastrophic failure or property damage.

Installation Location:

Install the pump as close to the pool or spa as possible, using short, direct suction and return piping to minimize friction loss and maximize efficiency. Maintain a minimum distance of 1.52 meters (5 feet) from the inside wall of the pool/spa, or as per local regulations. Install at least 0.9 meters (3 feet) from the heater outlet. Do not install the pump more than 2.5 meters (8 feet) above the water level. Choose a sheltered, well-ventilated location protected from excessive moisture. For hot tubs and spas, do not install within an outer enclosure or beneath the skirt. Allow at least 80 mm (3 inches) rear clearance for motor maintenance.

Piping:

Larger pipe sizes are recommended for improved plumbing. Use thread sealant for inlet and outlet fittings. Avoid 90° elbows directly at the pump inlet/outlet. A valve, elbow, or tee in the suction line should be at least five times the suction line pipe diameter away from the pump's front (e.g., 250 mm for a 50 mm pipe) to ensure faster priming and longer pump life. Flooded suction systems should have gate valves on suction and discharge pipes for maintenance, with the suction gate valve at least five times the suction pipe diameter away from the pump.

Electrical Specifications:

Circuit Protection: Two-pole 20 AMP safety device at the Electrical Panel. Input: 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 3200 Watts, 1 phase. A means for disconnection must be incorporated in the fixed wiring. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced. The pump must be supplied through an RCD with a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30mA (Type A or B GFCI).

Wiring:

Ensure all electrical breakers and switches are off before wiring. Wait at least 60 seconds after disconnecting power due to stored charge. Verify that the supply voltage matches the motor nameplate requirements to prevent permanent motor damage. Follow national and local electrical codes for wiring sizes and installation. Use strain relief and ensure all electrical connections are clean and tight. Cut wires to appropriate length to avoid overlap. Reinstall the keypad after wiring, ensuring the cable is not pinched.
