PART 7: STARTING & OPERATING THE VEHICLE
PB1319 (CAT. NO. 5296 ) —73— 22-01691 (R02/02)
Transmission Retarder
Retarder Switch
If you have this option, it will act like a brake to slow your vehicle with-
out using the brakes. Take your foot off the throttle and operate the
retarder switch. When you do not need full retarder effect, you can
apply it intermittently (off and on) to cause gradual or partial slowing.
Continuous application of your retarder will cause your hydraulic fluid
to get hotter. Intermittent application will help prevent overheating.
Auxiliary Transmission
Refer to the transmission manufacturer’s manual for information.
Dual Steer Vehicle Operation
Dual steer vehicles are equipped with dual-control electronic shift
controls that may have an auto neutral control and a shift shock elimi-
nator feature. Follow the procedures below to operate these types of
vehicles.
Operating from the Streetside (LH) Drive Station
1. Start and run the engine and wait until the air system pressure is
in the normal operating range.
2. Depress the foot brake pedal & push in the parking brake valve.
WARNING! Relying completely on your automatic trans-
mission hydraulic retarder is dangerous. If your engine
shuts down, your retarder will not operate. If you are
going fast, or going downhill at any speed, you could
lose control and have a serious accident. When you are
using your retarder, be ready in an emergency to apply
your service brakes suddenly.
NOTE: A shift shock eliminator will not allow a shift from
neutral to either a forward or reverse gear when the engine
speed is over 900 rpm.
•A movement of the shift selector lever accomplishes only
one upshift or downshift of the transmission at a time.
