Maintenance
Drive Chain Slack
1. Check the amount of chain slack by moving the vehicle slightly forward to gain slack at
the top side of the chain.
2. Collapse the suspension with an adjustable (buckle type) trailer tie-down strap. Fasten
the strap around the axle and rear bumper tube.
3. Tighten the strap until a straight
line can be drawn from the rear
axle to the gearcase output shaft
intersecting the swing arm pivot.
This establishes the tightest
chain position.
4. Pull down on the chain tensioner
to move it out of the way, then
measure chain slack. It should
have 1/4"-1/2" (6-12 mm)
deflection.
5. If the chain needs adjustment,
use the procedure on page 155.
