The POWERBASE 2800W Electric Silent Shredder 577147 is designed for efficient and quiet shredding of garden waste. This instruction manual provides important information for assembly, operation, and maintenance to ensure safe and correct use of the product.
Function Description
The silent shredder is equipped with a powerful motor and motor brake, overload protection with an auto-reverse system, and restart prevention for additional safety. It utilizes a blade cylinder system for cutting, which operates quietly and automatically draws in the shredding material. The sturdy chassis ensures a stable standing position and good mobility, making it suitable for outdoor use.

- Intermittent operation: Each cycle comprises a period of operation of 40 seconds at rated power input and a period of 60 seconds with the machine at no load.
The maximum branch thickness that can be shredded depends on the type and quality of the wood. Hardwood (e.g., oak/beech) and dry or knotted wood may have a reduced maximum shredding thickness compared to softwood (e.g., pine/spruce). The equipment is intended for use only in premises having an eliminate current capacity equal to or greater than 100A per phase supplied from a distribution network having a nominal voltage of 220-240V. Users are advised to check with their electricity provider if in doubt.
Usage Features
- Assembly: The shredder unit can be stored in the collection box for compact storage and transportation. Assembly involves attaching the two transportation wheels, screwing on the two stabilising feet to the chassis, and fixing the shredder unit onto the top of the chassis with four screws. The collection box is then inserted, ensuring the safety switch is in the 'OFF' position, and secured by rotating the safety switch clockwise to the 'ON' position. The shredder will not switch on unless the collection box and safety switch are correctly positioned and engaged.
- Operation:
- Before starting, ensure the hopper funnel is empty.
- To switch on, engage the safety lock in the centre of the operation selection switch by pushing forwards, then turn the switch clockwise to the 'ON' position.
- To switch off, turn the operating selection switch counter-clockwise to a central position.
- Always wear appropriate hearing, eye, and hand protection (PPE).
- Keep all body parts away from the shredder when in use, especially the funnel and ejection area.
- When feeding branches, hold them firmly until they are automatically drawn in.
- Adapt to the shredder's speed to avoid overloading, which can cause it to slow down, overheat, and shut down.
- To prevent clogging, mix freshly cut branches or leafy matter with drier materials.
- Remove mud and stones from roots before shredding to prevent blade dulling.
- Do not shred soft and wet material; compost it directly.
- Keep a few dry branches for cleaning the unit at the end of operation.
- Do not turn off the unit until all material has passed the blades to prevent blockages.
- Overload Protection and Reversing Mechanism: In case of overload, the shredder may switch off automatically. To restart, turn the operating mode selection switch to the central 'OFF' position and press the reset switch. If material remains trapped, release the rectangular safety lock, then turn the round knob to the left to activate the cutting mechanism in reverse for a few seconds to release blockages. Remove obstructions carefully from the feed hopper.
- Feeder: Use the feeder to help feed material down the funnel as necessary.
- Collection Box: The collection box may fill unevenly. Do not allow shredded material to accumulate near the ejection area. Empty the box by switching off the shredder, disengaging the safety switch, rotating it to 'OFF', removing the box, and then re-fitting and engaging the safety switch to 'ON'.
Maintenance Features
- General Cleaning and Servicing:
- Do not spray water onto the shredder to avoid electric shock.
- Keep the shredder, wheels, and air vents clean using a brush or cloth. Avoid cleaners and solvents.
- Regularly check shredder guards for wear or damage and ensure they are firmly attached. Check that nuts, bolts, and screws are tight.
- Check covers and guards for damage and improper attachment; replace components if necessary.
- Store the shredder in a safe, dry place out of children's reach. Do not cover it in nylon bags, as moisture may develop.
- Blade Adjustment (Pressure Plate):
- The pressure plate is used to finely adjust cutting performance and compensate for wear on the roller blade and pressure plate.
- To improve cutting performance, advance the pressure plate towards the rotating roller blade. This ensures the blade tips cut into the pressure plate, which is sacrificial and will reduce in size over time.
- Important: Do not advance the pressure plate while the blade is stationary, as this can damage the pressure plate or shredder.
- To adjust: Ensure the shredder inlet is free of material. Start the machine normally (down direction). Slowly rotate the adjustment knob clockwise in 1/2 turn increments while the blade is moving. Continue until a grinding noise is heard, indicating the pressure plate is being cut by the roller blade. Small aluminium shavings in the collection box confirm correct adjustment. Test cutting performance with a woody branch (should be cut into approximately 3cm pieces).
- Removing Blockages:
- Always switch off the product, disconnect from power, and allow to cool before clearing blockages.
- Wear hand protection when working on the blade cylinder.
- For stubborn blockages, remove the four Allen screws on the housing cover and carefully remove the cover (may require light jerking movements). Clear any blockages.
- When refitting the cover, ensure the blade shaft, pressure plate rod, and Allen screw recesses are correctly aligned and fit smoothly. Ensure the cutting pressure plate is positioned correctly. Secure the housing cover firmly with the four Allen screws.
- Plug Replacement: If the fitted plug needs replacement, connect the blue wire to the 'N' (Neutral) terminal (or black), and the brown wire to the 'L' (Live) terminal (or red). Never connect live or neutral wires to the earth terminal of the plug. Only fit an approved BS 1363 or BS 1363/A plug and correctly rated BS 1362 13 Amp fuse. Consult a qualified electrician if in doubt. If a moulded plug is removed, dispose of it carefully to prevent accidental plugging into a power socket.
- Storage: For convenient storage, the shredder unit can be disassembled and placed inside the collection box. To do this, turn the shredder upside down, rest it on the hopper, and remove the four screws holding the base to the shredder body unit.
