Do you have a question about the Pulse-Bac 552 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Pulse-Bac 500 MK.2 Series is a line of commercial vacuum and dust recovery systems designed for various applications requiring different levels of lift (suction) and CFM (flow rate). This series includes models 552, 552H, and 576, all featuring patented Pulse-Bac Automatic Pulse-Clean Technology to prevent filters from clogging and losing suction during operation. These vacuums are primarily intended for use with hand-held power tools to capture, collect, and control dust, or for general clean-up of dry, non-combustible materials. The 552H model is HEPA Certified, making it suitable for capturing dust from hazardous materials such as lead paint, concrete, drywall, stone, masonry, wood, fine powders, asbestos, fiberglass, plastics, and metals, as well as any other dry non-combustible material.

Important Technical Specifications:

Model CFM Lift Collection Weight Inlet Amperage Voltage
552 150 87" 8 Gallon Steel Tank 30 lbs. 1.5" (Locking) 12.5@110V / 6.6@220V 110V/220V*
552H 150 87" 8 Gallon Steel Tank 30 lbs. 1.5" (Locking) 12.5@110V / 6.6@220V 110V/220V*
576 176 97" 8 Gallon Steel Tank 31 lbs. 1.5" (Locking) 12.2@110V 110V

The 552 and 552H models operate on 110V AC 50/60 Hz, with the 552H having an additional HEPA IEST RP CC007.3 filter. The HEPA filter in the 552H is industrial-rated and certified to capture dust particles as small as 0.3 microns with a 99.99% efficiency rating. The twist-on filters are also HEPA filters, capable of capturing 0.3-micron dust particles with 85% or better efficiency and 100% efficiency at 2 microns and above.

Usage Features:

The Pulse-Bac 500 MK.2 Series comes fully assembled and is ready to operate by simply plugging it in and turning on the power switch. A key feature is the Automatic Tool Start (ATS) system. Users can plug their power tool into the ATS outlet on the vacuum and set the vacuum's power button to "auto." When the tool is activated, the vacuum will automatically turn on. After the tool is turned off, the vacuum will continue to run for 3 seconds to clear the hose before shutting down. This feature is designed for tools that do not exceed 15 amps. Users are cautioned that combining the vacuum's draw with the tool's draw might trip a circuit breaker if other devices are on the same circuit. If this occurs, it is recommended to discontinue using the ATS and find another outlet for the tool.

Safety is emphasized throughout the manual, with specific warnings against operating in wet environments, with ungrounded power sources or improper extension cords, unattended, or with hot ashes or combustible materials. It is also advised not to operate in the presence of explosive vapors. The vacuum should always be unplugged when not in use or before servicing, and stored indoors to reduce the risk of electrical shock. For wood dust collection, using a static reduction hose is recommended due to the potential for static electricity build-up.

Maintenance Features:

Emptying the tank involves removing two knobs that secure the head assembly to the tank. The head assembly can then be lifted off using its handle and placed on a flat surface. The manual warns against lifting a heavy collection tank filled with dust and debris to prevent back injury or falls, suggesting that contents be scooped out until the tank is light enough for one person to lift comfortably. Before emptying, the vacuum must be turned off and unplugged to prevent accidental starting.

Filter installation and replacement are critical maintenance tasks. The 552 comes with two individually tested HEPA Certified filters, and the 552H has an additional HEPA IEST RP CC007.3 filter. To replace twist-on filters, a rubber seal is first installed onto the top of the filter, which is then twisted counter-clockwise into the receiver under the head assembly until tight. It is crucial to ensure the filter receiver is clean before installation. Once installed, filters should not be removed unless they are being replaced, as improper reinstallation can cause problems. Due to the automatic filter cleaning system, filters typically only need replacement every 6-8 months with daily use. Assistance for filter installation is available through Pulse-Bac Vacuums Customer Services.

The manual also provides instructions for motor replacement and printed circuit board (PCB) replacement, which are considered repairs for qualified technicians. For motor replacement, specific steps are outlined, including disconnecting the motor from the PCB and removing screws. For 552H models, steps from the HEPA filter replacement procedure must be followed first. New motor installation involves aligning the motor on the plenum cover and securing it with screws. PCB replacement requires disconnecting the Pulse-Bac from the power source, removing the top cover assembly, and then removing and installing the PCB by aligning mounting holes and securing with screws.

Troubleshooting tips are provided for common issues such as the unit not starting (check power source, cord, switch), low lift and CFM (check vacuum head alignment, seal condition, saturated filters, filter cleaning system operation, inlet/hose obstructions), dust coming out of the head (check filter installation, seals, tears/cuts, saturation), and the motor not working (check power, switch, motor). For any repairs, Pulse-Bac Vacuums recommends contacting their service department or having a qualified technician perform the work. If a user or their retained technician plans to make repairs, a list of necessary tools is provided, including a Volt/Ohm Meter, various screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches.
