Overview

The QLK-150 is a wheelchair interface bracket, specifically model Q04BR001, designed to facilitate the securement of manual wheelchairs within a vehicle using the QLK-150 Docking system. This bracket is intended for use with manual wheelchairs that have a 1-inch tube frame diameter and a lower frame rail positioned higher than 6 inches from the ground.

Function Description:

The primary function of the QLK-150 bracket is to act as an interface between a manual wheelchair and the QLK-150 Docking system. It provides a secure attachment point, allowing the wheelchair to be safely restrained as a seat in a motor vehicle. The system comprises a main bracket (center strap), cross bars, stabilizer V-bracket, bracket clamps, and a docking bolt. These components work together to create a robust connection between the wheelchair frame and the vehicle's docking mechanism. The docking bolt, adjustable in height, connects to the QLK docking system, ensuring proper engagement and securement.

Important Technical Specifications:

The QLK-150 bracket is designed for manual wheelchairs with specific frame characteristics:

  • Tube Frame Diameter: 1 inch
  • Lower Frame Rail Height: Greater than 6 inches from the ground

The hardware checklist provides a detailed list of components included for installation:

  • 5/8-11 Hex Jam Nut (Q04C6512-1): 1 unit
  • 5/8-11x3" Grade 8 Bolt (Q04C6509-2): 1 unit
  • 5/8-11x2-1/2" Grade 8 Bolt (Q04C6509-1): 1 unit
  • 3/8"-16x1-1/2" Hex Bolt (Q5-6509-BK-2): 4 units
  • 5/16"-18x1-1/2" Hex Bolt (Q5-6509-BK-7): 8 units
  • 3/8"-16 Nut w/Nylon Insert (Q5-6512-D): 4 units
  • 5/16"-18 Nut w/Nylon Insert (Q5-6512-BK-4): 8 units
  • 3/8" Flat Washer (Q5-6511): 8 units
  • 5/16" Flat Washer (Q5-6511-BK-3): 16 units

Hole sizes required for drilling during installation are:

  • Center Strap: 3/8” holes (four locations)
  • Cross Bars: 5/16" holes (two locations per bar)
  • Bracket Clamps: 5/16" holes (two locations per clamp)
  • V Bracket Stabilizer: 3/8" holes (two locations)

The docking bolt should be positioned approximately 2 inches in front of the wheel axis. The V bracket requires at least 3-4 inches of clearance above it and must extend far enough forward to clear any footrests, covers, or obstructions.

Usage Features:

The QLK-150 is a universal bracket (Q04BR0001), meaning it is designed to be adaptable to various manual wheelchairs within the specified parameters. However, it is crucial to note that its suitability for a specific wheelchair model has not been assessed by Q'STRAINT, and this remains the responsibility of the installer. Q'STRAINT recommends using a tested bracket designed for a specific transportable wheelchair whenever possible.

Installation involves several key steps:

  1. Cutting Cross Bars: Both cross bars must fit between the lowest horizontal frame rails of the wheelchair. They should be cut equally from both ends to allow them to reach the oval openings of the bracket clamps.
  2. Fitting Bracket to Wheelchair: The four bracket clamps slide onto the cross bars, and the cross bars are placed between the frame rails with the holes on top. The clamps are then slid out until the tubing is firmly seated. Holes are marked for drilling.
  3. Aligning Main Bracket (Center Strap): The assembly is positioned so the docking bolt is approximately 2 inches in front of the wheel axis. Holes and excess material are marked for drilling/cutting.
  4. Aligning V Bracket: The V bracket is aligned to the center of the main bracket, ensuring 3-4 inches of clearance above it and sufficient forward extension to clear obstructions. Holes and excess are marked.
  5. Drilling and Cutting: All marked holes are drilled to the specified sizes, and any excess material is cut.
  6. Installing Bracket: The center strap is secured to the cross bars using 3/8” hardware. The V bracket is secured to the front. 5/16" hardware is used to secure the bracket clamps to both the wheelchair frame and the cross bars. The docking bolt is attached to the bracket on the bottom of the wheelchair.
  7. Adjusting Docking Bolt Height: The height of the docking bolt is adjusted by threading or un-threading it into the center strap. The final height should be determined with the user sitting in the wheelchair.

A "Rear View" diagram illustrates the preferred and optional zones for wheelchair placement relative to the wheelchair reference plane, indicating a 15-degree angle from the center line and a width of 300mm (11.81 inches) for the preferred zone.

Maintenance Features:

While the manual primarily focuses on installation, it implicitly highlights maintenance considerations through its emphasis on proper installation and post-installation checks:

  • Thorough Reading of Instructions: Installers are required to read, understand, and follow all instructions thoroughly to ensure correct installation, which is fundamental to the long-term performance and safety of the device.
  • Wheelchair Maintenance Manual: Installers must read and follow the wheelchair's maintenance manual for disassembly and reassembly, indicating that proper handling of the wheelchair itself is part of the overall system's maintenance.
  • Test Drive: After the bracket is fitted, each wheelchair should be test-driven to ensure it is functioning correctly. This serves as an immediate check for proper installation and can help identify any issues that might require adjustment or further attention.
  • Contact for Questions: The availability of Q'STRAINT offices for addressing any questions suggests ongoing support for troubleshooting and maintenance-related inquiries.
  • Separate QLK Docking System Manual: For installation and use/care of the QLK Docking system itself, users are directed to a separate manual, implying that the overall system's maintenance involves understanding both components.

The QLK-150 bracket is a critical component for ensuring the safety of wheelchair users in transit, and its proper installation and adherence to guidelines are paramount.
