8 ADJUSTMENTS
8.12 BACKLAPPING _____________________________________________________
There is no need to remove the cutting cylinder to backlap.
• Backlapping grinds the cutting cylinder blades the bottom blade.
•If the cutting cylinder needs frequent backlapping, remove the cutting cylinder and regrind on a grinding
machine.
• Ransomes Jacobsen recommends that the backlapping procedure must have the risk calculated by the
manager of the machine.
• Only approved personnel can Backlap a machine.
• The machine must be stopped, the engine turned off and the parking brake applied.
• To rotate the cutting cylinder, use a large piece of wood or put a socket
on the screw [N] See. 8.10).
• When you complete backlapping, remove any grinding paste, set the reel and
the bottom blade. Return the controls to the normal mow positions.
BACKLAPPING THE CUTTING UNIT
1. Tilt the machine backward.
2. Check the cutting cylinder is set to the bottom blade (see previous note).
3. Where fitted, disengage the cylinder and landroll clutches.
4. Remove the chain case cover.
5. Apply some carborundum grinding paste* on the spiral cutters.
6. Rotate the cutting cylinder in the reverse of cutting. Use a socket spanner and brace on the screw [N]
(See 8.10) at the LH end of the cylinder spindle.
NOTE: During ‘backlapping make sure that the setting of the cutting cylinder to the bottom blade is correct.
Adjust as required.
The cutters are sharp if they will cut paper cleanly along the length of the bottom blade.

Remove all Grinding Paste before Operation.
