TheAIS500transceivermustbettedinalocationwhereitisnot
likelytobesteppedonortrippedover,andwhich:
Iscloseenoughtoallowconnectiontotheboat’sVHFsetwiththe
3ft(1m)RFcablesupplied.
Isatleast3ft(1m)fromanengine,compassoranymagnetic
device.
Hasatleast6in(100mm)ofclearspacebelow,toallowaccess
forcablingandadequatecablebends.
Ismaintainedatatemperaturebetween–10°C(14°F)and55°C
(130°F).
Ismaintainedinadryconditionandwherethereisnolikelihood
ofthetransceiverbeingsplashed.
DoesNOThaveaammableorhazardousatmosphere.
Powersupply
TheAIS500transceiverrequiresa12Vdcor24Vdcpowersupply,
typicallyfromacircuitbreakerontheboat’spowerpanelorfroma
fuseblocknearthetransceiver.
VHFantennarequirement
TheAIS500transceiverrequiresinputsfrombothGPSandVHF
antenna.
TheAIS500transceiverhasaninbuiltVHFsplittertoenable
youtoconnectyourexistingVHFantennadirectlytotheAIS500
transceiver,thenroutethesplitsignalfromthetransceivertoyour
VHFset.Thismaycausesomedegradationofperformanceofyour
VHFset.Ifthelevelofdegradationisunacceptable,werecommend
youuseseparateVHFantennaefortheAIS500andtheVHFset.
ThelossvaluesfortheinbuiltsplitteraregivenintheSpecication
section.
GPSantennarequirement
AGPSantennaissuppliedwiththetransceiverandmustbe
installedinaccordancewiththeinstructionsgivenhere.DoNOT
connectanyotherGPSantennatotheAIS500transceiver.
TheGPSantennacanbemountedeitheronaathorizontalsurface
oronasuitablepole.
Ifyouintendsurfacemountingtheantenna,ensureyouhave
accesstotheundersideofthemountingsurface.
Ifyouintendpole-mountingtheantenna,thepoleneedsa1inch
14TPIthread.
Important:Themainrequirementoftheintendedlocationforthe
GPSantennaisthatitgivesagooddirectlineofsitetotheentire
sky,rightaroundthehorizon.
Ensurethattheintendedmountinglocationis:
Openandclearofanyobstructions(suchasmasts,searchlights,
orotherstructures)thatcouldblockline-of-sighttothesky.
Aslowaspossible,tokeeptheantennaasstableaspossible.
Themorestabletheunit,themoreeffectivelyitwilltracksatellites
andprovidestabledata.
Asfaraspossible(atleast1m(3ft))fromotherantennaeand
electronicequipment.
DoNOTmounttheantenna:
Inanyareawhereitcouldbesteppedonortrippedover
Upamast.Thiswillcausetheantennatoswingandgive
signicanterrorsinpositiondata
