BATTERY CHARGER-EARLIER
The following informa-
tion covers typical earlier
yacht battery chargers.
Use the photos found
to identify the type in-
stalled along with your
charger owner’s manual
found in the informa-
tion packet. The battery
chargers are located in
the bilge. They are used
to keep both the engine
cranking and the house
batteries in peak condi-
tion. The battery charger
operates on 120 volt AC
power available from
the dockside shore pow-
er or from the generator. The charger changes AC to DC
current inside the charger to enable battery charging. When
the diesel engines are running the 115 amp alternators use
DC current to charge the batteries.
All 3 batteries are selectively charged through a set of relays
called VSR’s located on the battery management panel.
They sense which batteries need a charge. The relay circuit
closes and sends a charge to the appropriate battery.
Both 60 amp battery chargers are wired in parallel provid-
ing charging current for the port, starboard and house
batteries.
The battery charger features a rotary switch to set the bat-
tery type. It has been factory set to #6 which is for fl ooded
lead acid batteries. Do not attempt to change it as battery
charger/battery damage will result. If the need arises to
change cranking batteries do so in pairs to maintain a bal-
anced battery potential. Also, never mix fl ooded lead acid
batteries with gel types as the battery charger rotary switch
is not adaptable to this situation.
Contact your authorized Regal yacht dealer for more infor-
mation concerning any rotary switch adjustment.
OUTPUT CURRENT
METER
This battery charger is fully automatic, microprocessor
controlled and is multi-staged to provide the most effi cient
service for the customer.
The face of the battery charger displays status, battery
type and fault LED’s.
Periodically check the battery charger output current (DC
ammeter) to visually monitor the charging circuit. The
levels will vary depending where the system is as far as
recharging the batteries. See the illustration.
With a correct functioning charging system as the batteries
become charged the amp rate should diminish. Batteries
that are highly discharged will demand a greater initial
charge rate and the output meter may show on the high
side of the readout and slowly diminish as the battery over
time becomes fully charged. This is a normal condition.
Another way to check the battery charger output is at the
AC/DC panel. With all battery charger breakers off the
volt meter should show around 12.5 volts. Energize several
breakers and fl ip on the battery charger breaker. The volt
meter should slowly begin to show charging current above
battery voltage levels .
