Overview

The Rinnai Portable Unflued Gas Convection Heater with Electric Boost is designed to provide efficient and comfortable heating for your home. This appliance combines the power of gas convection with an electric boost function, offering versatile heating options to suit various needs and preferences. It is designed for ease of use, featuring a comprehensive control panel and a remote control for convenient operation.

Function Description

The primary function of this Rinnai heater is to warm a room using gas convection, with an additional electric boost for enhanced heating when needed. The appliance operates by drawing in cool room air, heating it through a combustion process (gas) and/or an electric element, and then discharging warm air through its louvres. This convection process ensures even heat distribution throughout the room.

The heater offers multiple operating modes to optimize comfort and energy efficiency. These include:

  • GAS Mode: Heats the room using continuous gas convection, automatically adjusting to maintain the set temperature.
  • GAS ECON Mode: Utilizes gas convection, but after 30 minutes of maintaining the set temperature, the comfort control system progressively lowers the set temperature by 2°C over 60 minutes to save energy.
  • GAS ECON AUTO OFF Mode: Similar to GAS ECON, but gas combustion will start and stop automatically to maintain the set temperature minus 2°C.
  • GAS ELECTRIC Mode: Heats using both gas and electric convection. Electric convection is engaged when the room is cold or when the heat load is high, while gas combustion is continuous and adjusts automatically.
  • GAS ECON ELECTRIC Mode: Combines the energy-saving features of ECON mode with gas and electric convection.
  • GAS ECON ELECTRIC AUTO OFF Mode: Integrates ECON, electric boost, and auto-off functions for maximum energy efficiency.
  • ELECTRIC Mode: Heats the room solely using electric convection. The electric element switches on and off automatically to maintain the set temperature. In this mode, timer operation is disabled, and electric convection only operates when the set temperature is at least 2°C higher than the current room temperature.

The heater incorporates a "Pre-heat" function that automatically operates the appliance before a programmed start time, ensuring the room reaches the desired temperature by the scheduled time. This intelligent feature senses the room temperature one hour before the programmed ON time and adjusts its operation accordingly.

Usage Features

The Rinnai heater is designed for user-friendly operation, both through its control panel and a remote control.

Control Panel:

The control panel features a clear digital display that shows the current room temperature, set room temperature, clock, and various indicators for mode, timer, child lock, and filter status.

  • STANDBY/ON Button: A single touch turns the heater on or off.
  • SET Button: Used to navigate through settings such as time, timer programs, and operating modes.
  • Up/Down Buttons: Adjust temperature settings, set clock time, and program timer values.
  • Mode Indicator: Displays the currently selected heating mode (GAS, ELECTRIC, ECON, AUTO OFF).
  • Timer Button: Allows access to timer programming functions.
  • On/Combustion Indicator: Green (steady) indicates the heater is ON (Electric Mode) or Timer Programs are ON (Standby Mode). Red (steady) indicates gas burner operation. Red (flashing) signifies a heater operational error.
  • Child Lock Indicator: Illuminates when the child lock is active.
  • Filter Indicator: Flashes when the dust filters require cleaning.

Remote Control:

The remote control provides convenient operation from a distance.

  • STANDBY/ON Buttons: Separate buttons to turn the heater on or off remotely.
  • UP/DOWN Buttons: Adjust the set temperature.
  • The remote control is powered by two 1.5V (AAA) batteries. It comes with a caddy for storage.
  • Note that the remote control will not function if the heater is in Timer mode, and some fluorescent lights may interfere with its signals.

Key Operating Procedures:

  • Turning On/Off: Press the STANDBY/ON button on the control panel or the remote.
  • Adjusting Temperature: Once the heater is ON, use the Up/Down buttons on the control panel or remote to set the desired room temperature between 16°C and 26°C, or select 'L' (lowest continuous combustion) or 'H' (highest continuous combustion).
  • Setting Clock: In STANDBY mode, press the SET button to enter the TIME function. Use the Up/Down buttons to set the day, hour, and minutes, then confirm with the SET button.
  • Setting Heater Modes: After turning the heater ON, press the SET button repeatedly to cycle through the available modes (GAS, GAS ECON, GAS ECON AUTO OFF, GAS ELECTRIC, GAS ECON ELECTRIC, GAS ECON ELECTRIC AUTO OFF, ELECTRIC).
  • Programming On/Off Timers: The Dual WEEKDAY/WEEKEND Timer allows programming two separate ON/OFF periods per day for weekdays and weekends. In STANDBY mode, press the SET button until "PROGRAM" is shown. Use the Up/Down buttons to set the desired ON/OFF times for each timer period.
  • Override Function: This function allows manual override of current timer operations. If the heater is between the finishing and starting times of a timer program, selecting Override will turn the heater on.

Safety Devices:

The Rinnai heater is equipped with several safety devices to ensure safe operation:

  • Overheat Switch: Automatically turns off gas and/or electric heating if the heater gets too hot (e.g., due to blocked filters).
  • Fuse: Protects electrical circuits.
  • Flame Failure Device: Automatically cuts off gas supply in case of gas failure.
  • Oxygen Depletion Safety Device: Cuts off gas supply if oxygen levels in the room drop below a pre-set limit.
  • Tilt Switch: Cuts off gas supply and/or electric power if the heater is knocked over or jolted.
  • Power Failure Sensor: Automatically closes gas valves during a power cut.

Important Points for Usage:

  • Ensure proper room ventilation.
  • Do not install in a bedroom (except in ELECTRIC mode), bathroom, shower, swimming pool, toilet, or sauna.
  • Maintain clearances from combustible materials (curtains, furniture).
  • Do not place articles in front of louvres or cover the appliance.
  • Do not move the heater while it is on.
  • Use a dedicated 240V 10 Amp power point; do not use power boards or double adaptors.
  • Supervise young children to prevent them from playing with or sitting on the appliance.
  • Avoid operating the heater in areas with paint, aerosols, or excessive dust.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the efficient and safe operation of your Rinnai heater.

  • Cleaning: Unplug the heater before cleaning. Use a soft, damp cloth for all parts. Do not use solvents or spray aerosols near the heater.
  • Air Filters: Dusty filters reduce airflow and effectiveness. The "FILTER" warning indicator will flash when cleaning is required. Filters should be vacuumed at regular intervals, ideally weekly during the heating season.
  • Filter Removal for Cleaning:
    1. Undo and remove the retaining screw for Filters 1 & 2 (store safely).
    2. Lift filters up and then backwards to remove them from locating tabs.
    3. Gently vacuum dust and lint from the filters.
    4. Replace filters by repositioning the tabs and fastening with the retaining screw.
    5. Filter 3 (the small filter) should remain in position and be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner.
  • Servicing: Rinnai recommends servicing the appliance every 2 years by an authorized person. Any damaged supply cords, gas hoses, or other components must be replaced by Rinnai or a suitably qualified person.

The heater also has a self-diagnostic system that displays "Error Codes" on the control panel if a fault occurs. These codes assist in diagnosing problems and may help resolve issues without a service call. If an error persists, contact Rinnai Australia or your local agent, quoting the displayed error code.
