5 Trying Out the Instrument
This chapter introduces the first steps with the R&S SMB100B. It shows how to
operate and configure the instrument using simple examples. The complete
description of the functionality and its usage is given in the R&S SMB100B user
manual. Basic instrument operation is described in Chapter 6, "Instrument Con-
trol", on page 44.
Prerequisites
The instrument is set up, connected to the power supply, and started up as
described in Chapter 3, "Preparing for Use", on page 12.
The first signal generation tasks explain how to generate an unmodulated signal,
to configure the RF signal output, and how you can vary the RF frequency and
level in sweep mode.
The instrument is manually operated via the touchscreen. Try out the following:

5.1 Generating an Unmodulated Carrier
We start to generate a simple unmodulated signal. In this example, the
R&S SMB100B can be in its minimal configuration.
1. On the R&S SMB100B front panel, press the [Preset] key to set a defined ini-
tial instrument state.
2. Set the frequency:
a) In the "Status Bar", tap the "Frequency" field.
b) On the on-screen keypad, enter "6" and press the "GHz" key.
