Overview

The Roku Express (model: 3900) is a streaming player designed to deliver a wide range of entertainment content to your television. It supports resolutions up to 1080p Full HD, ensuring a clear and vibrant picture for your viewing pleasure. The device comes with a standard IR remote, providing straightforward control over your streaming experience. This model is noted for being significantly more powerful than its predecessor, the Roku Express model 3700, offering enhanced performance while maintaining a similar setup process.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Roku Express is to stream digital content from various online services directly to your TV. It acts as a bridge between your internet connection and your television, allowing you to access a vast library of movies, TV shows, music, games, and other applications. The device connects to your TV via an HDMI® connection, making it compatible with most modern televisions. For older televisions, some Roku models may also include a standard composite video connection, though the Roku Express (model 3900) primarily utilizes HDMI. Once connected and set up, the Roku Express transforms your regular TV into a smart TV, providing on-demand entertainment at your fingertips. It operates on the Roku OS software, which is regularly updated to ensure optimal performance and access to the latest features and channels.

Usage Features:

Setup and Installation:

Setting up your Roku Express is a guided process designed to be user-friendly.

  1. Connecting to TV: The device connects to your TV using a High Speed HDMI Cable, which is typically included. Ensure your TV is set to the correct HDMI input to display the Roku logo as the device powers on.
  2. Powering On: The Roku Express can be powered by connecting its power connector to a wall outlet using the included power adapter. Alternatively, some Roku players can be powered by connecting the included USB cable directly to a USB port on your TV, though it's important to note that some TV USB ports may not provide sufficient power.
  3. Remote Control: The standard IR remote requires batteries, which you'll need to insert by opening the battery cover.
  4. Guided Setup: Once powered on and connected to your TV, the Roku Express initiates a guided setup process.
    • Language Selection: The first step involves choosing your preferred language for all text and dialog within the Roku application. You can scroll through the list and select your language using the OK button on your remote.
    • Internet Connection: Next, you'll connect your Roku Express to the internet. You'll select your wireless network from a list of available networks and enter your password. The device will automatically connect once the password is entered correctly. If you wish to see your password as you type, there's an option to "Show password." Passwords are case-sensitive, and you can use the shift button on the on-screen keyboard for capital letters. If your network isn't visible, you can choose to "Scan again." For Roku players with an Ethernet port, you also have the option to connect via an Ethernet cable to your router or Ethernet switch for a wired internet connection.
    • Software Download: After connecting to the internet, the Roku Express will automatically download the latest version of the Roku OS software and then reboot.
    • Display Type: The device will then auto-detect the best display resolution for your TV via the HDMI connection. You can manually adjust this setting later in the "Settings > Display type" menu if needed.
    • Account Creation and Activation: To fully utilize your Roku Express, it must be linked to a Roku account. Instructions for activation, including an activation code (e.g., “XCV5TG”), will be displayed on your TV. You'll need to visit roku.com/link on a computer or smartphone, enter the code, and follow the instructions to activate your device. It's crucial to type the URL carefully to avoid fraudulent websites, as Roku does not charge for device activation or account creation.

Personalization:

After setup, you can personalize your Roku Express by changing its theme or screensaver. The Roku Channel Store allows you to add new streaming channels, games, themes, screensavers, and other applications to enhance your experience.

Screen Mirroring:

The Roku Express (model 3900) supports screen mirroring from compatible Android™ or Windows® devices. This feature allows you to wirelessly replicate your device's screen onto your TV, displaying web pages, videos, photos, music, and more.

  • Compatibility: Screen mirroring is supported on Android devices running version 4.2 or later (excluding Google-branded devices running OS 6.0 or later like Nexus or Pixel). Windows devices running Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 also support this feature.
  • Enabling Screen Mirroring: On Android, the feature is typically found in the settings menu under terms like "Smart View," "Quick Connect," "Wireless display," or "Cast." On Windows 10, you can access it via the action center and select "Connect."
  • Request Handling: When a screen mirroring request is made, your Roku device will display an on-screen prompt. You can choose to:
    • Always accept: Allows content from the device without future prompts, adding it to an "Allowed devices" list.
    • Accept: Allows the current request for one attempt.
    • Ignore: Blocks the current attempt and prevents connection.
    • Always ignore: Blocks all future attempts from the device, adding it to a "Blocked devices" list.
  • Settings Adjustment: You can adjust screen mirroring settings by going to "Home > Settings > System > Screen mirroring" on your Roku device. Here, you can define how incoming requests are handled (Prompt, Always allow, Never allow) and manage your "Allowed devices" and "Blocked devices" lists.

Casting vs. Screen Mirroring:

It's important to differentiate between casting and screen mirroring.

  • Content: Casting only works with content from mobile apps that specifically support casting (e.g., YouTube, Netflix). Screen mirroring allows you to view content from any app installed on your mobile device.
  • Display: With casting, you only see the selected content playback on your TV. With screen mirroring, your entire mobile device screen, including buttons and menus, is replicated on your TV.
  • Control: Casting allows you to use either your mobile device or your Roku remote for control. Screen mirroring is controlled entirely from your mobile device.
  • Power State: Casting allows your mobile device to be powered off or used for other tasks once playback begins. Screen mirroring requires your mobile device to remain powered on for the duration of playback.

Sharing Personal Media:

You can share personal photos, videos, and music from your mobile device to your TV using the "Play on Roku" feature within the free Roku mobile app (available for iOS® and Android devices).

Spotify Support:

The Roku Express (model 3900) supports Spotify, allowing you to stream over 35 million songs. To find and install Spotify, navigate to "Streaming Channels" from your home screen, browse the "Music" genre, or use "Search Channels." If Spotify doesn't appear, check your Roku device's software version and model in "Settings > System > About." Spotify is supported on Roku OS 8.2 and above. You can also add Spotify from the Roku Channel Store on the web; the channel will automatically install on supported devices during the next 24-hour check or immediately if you manually check for a software update via "Settings > System > System update > Check now."

Maintenance Features:

  • Software Updates: The Roku Express automatically checks for and downloads the latest Roku OS software updates every 24-36 hours when connected to the internet. This ensures you have access to the newest features, security enhancements, and optimal performance. You can also manually check for updates via "Settings > System > System update > Check now."
  • Troubleshooting: If you experience issues such as no picture on your TV or problems with your remote control, the manual provides guidance on ensuring the correct TV input is selected and that the remote has fresh batteries. For internet connection issues, the device offers options to "Scan again" for networks, and further assistance is available through troubleshooting guides.
  • HDMI Cable: It is recommended to use the High Speed HDMI Cable that came with your Roku Express for the best display quality. Additional cables can be ordered from the Roku accessories store if needed.
  • Fraudulent Websites: When activating your device, it is important to carefully type the activation URL (roku.com/link) to avoid fraudulent websites, as Roku does not charge for device activation.
