The
pinion
of
the

on
a
coar
se
thread
on
the
a
rmature
shaft
and
is first
pr
esse
d
up
against
the
gear
rim
by
means
of
a shift
lever
until it
engages
with it. The
lever
is
electro-magnetically
operated.
Shortly
after
engagement
of
the
pinion,
the
switch
mounted
on
the
starter
automatically
closes
-
on
mechanically
operated
starters
by
means
of
the
engaging
lever
-
the
armature
revolves
and
the
pinion
screws
it
self
furth
er
forward
on
the
coarse
thread
until it
is
fully
engaged.
Even if
looth
on
tooth
engagem
ent
occ
urs, the switch will clos
e,
as
t
he
spring
is
sp
ring-
conn
e
ct
ed
to
the
g uide ring
and
the l
ever
is
therefore
no
t
hindered
in
its
mov
e
ment;
when
starti
ng, the
arma
tur
e
turns
the
pinion
until it
can
engage.
As
soo
n
as
the
pinion
runs
up
against
its
co
unt
e
rpart,
firm
contact
is e
stab
-
lish
ed
between
it
and
the
armatur
e,
and
the
eng
in
e is be
ing
started.
If,
aft
er
s
tarting,
the
e ngine be
gins
to
overtake
the s
ta
rt
er,
the
pinion
is
uncoup
led
f
rom
the
armature
s
haft
by
an
overrunn
ing
roller
clutch,
but
remains
engaged
with
the
gear
rim until t
he
eng
ag
ing lev
er
is
returned
to
its initial
position
by
a
return
s
pnng
.
To e

after

ng
switch
ed
off,
an

to
en
able

new

rt

be
made
