The
pinion
of
the
inertia

ion
type
starter
(Fig. 62) sl
ides
on
a
coarse
thr
e
ad
on
the
armature
shaft.
In
rest
position
the
gear
is
held
back
by
spring
te
nsion
and
the
pinion
is
not
engaged
.
Wh
en
the
starter
is
operated
,
the
acceleration
of
t
he
starte
r
and
the
i
nertia
of
t
he
pinion
result
in a
force
which c
auses
the
pinion
to
run
along
the
shaft
and
enga
ge
with
the
gear
rim.
When
the
pinion
has
re
ach
ed
the
stop
on
the
arma
ture
s
haft
the
drive
b
ec
ome
s
positive
and
the
engine
is
turned
by
the
starter
.
If,
after
starting,
the e ngine be
gins
to
overtake
the
star
te r, the
pinion
is
uncoupl
ed
from
the
armature
sha
ft
by
an
overrunning
roller
clutch
and
is
spun
back
by
sp
ri
ng
pressure
in
to
rest
position.
