Operating

Do

Before

wait

minute
to
allow
the
starter
to
coo
l
and
the
battery
to
r
ecove
r.
If
there
is a
grating
of
teeth,
switch
off
s
tart
er
immediately
and
repeat
starting
attempt.
Let
go
the
starter
as soon as
the
engine
runs
under
i
ts
own
power.
Should
the
system
not
be
provided
with
a
starter
safety
de
vice,
never
switch on
the
starter
until
the
engine
or
the
pi
nion
ha
ve
come
to
rest, as
otherwise
damage
will
be
caused
to
pinion
and
g
ear
rim.
If
the
engine
does
no
t
star
t
after
some
starting
attempts,
furthe
r st
ar
t
ing
attempts
will
serve
no
purpose
and
will
on
ly
lead
to
exhaustion
of
th
e
batte
ry. The
fault
should
be
soug
ht
a
nd
reme
di
ed
(ch
eck the
fue
l
supply
in
particular).
Maintenance
Danger
of
short
circuits
ar
i
ses
when
work
is
carr
i
ed
out
on
the elec
tr
i
cal
componen
ts
of
the
built
-
in
starter.
It
is
therefore
strongly
recommended,
before
carrying
out
such
0
wo
rk,
that
the
earth
lead
be
disconn
ected
from
the
battery.
Do
not
place
tools
on
the
battery!
Carbon
brushes
The
condition
of
the
carbon
brushes
should
be checked
period
ically.
After
removing
the ret
aining
strap
(2, Fig.
61)
of
th
e s
liding
gear
starter
or
screwing
off
the
cap
(1,
Fig.
62)
a
nd
tak
ing
out the fuse, the
compensating
washers
and
the
cap
(2
, Fig .
62)
of
the
inertia
pinion
type
star
ter,
th
e
spri
ng
whi
ch
pr
esses
the
releva
nt
carbon
brush on
to
the
commutator
should
be
raised,
pre
fe
rably
with
a
ho
ok
(take
care
not
to
bend
spring
to
one
side
and
not
to
raise
it
long
er
than
necessary
).
Now
check
that
the
car-
bo
n brushes
can
easily
be
moved
in
their guides
in
the
brush
holder.
The
carbon
brushes and brush
hold
ers must
be
kept
free
of
dust,
oil
and grease.
If
these
parts
are
dirt
y
or
j
am,
they
should
be
cleaned
w
ith
a cle
an
gasoline-damped
rag
(not
wi
th
waste
w
ool,
as this
easily
sh
eds
fibres)
and
we
ll
dried
.
Do
not
sa
ndpap
er,
fi
le
or
u
se
kniv
es
on
the
bright
gro
und
surface
of
the
carbon
brush
es.
Blow
o
ut
the
bru
sh ho
ld
e
rs
we
ll.
If a
carbo
n brush
is
bro
ken,
unsoldered
or
so
worn
that
the
spring
or
the sol
dered-in
strand
in
the brush
is
in
danger
of
str
ikin
g
agai
nst
the
br
u
sh
hold
er,
then
it
should
be
repl
aced.

When
fitting
the
carbon
brushes,
care
shou
ld
be
ta
ken
that
the
spring
does
not
s
tr
ike
against
the
brush.
When
fitting
the
cov
er
strap
(2, Fig. 61)
of
the sl
iding
pinion
starter,
care
should
be
taken
to
ensure
that
the locking cl
asp
li
es
on the
middle
of
a
web;
the
sea
lin
g
strip
glued
into
the
strap
sho
uld
close
ly
fit
every
wh
er
e.

the

Commutator
The
commutator
should
have
an
even,
grey-
black
surface,
and
must
be
free
of
dust,

waste
woo
l)
and
we
ll d
ried.
Commutators
which
have

n
Both

rings

rt
er

bearings
must
not
be

sed or

g cleaners.
